Inside each tooth is a space containing nerves and blood vessels, known as the pulp. Deep decay, cracks, repeated dental work or injury can inflame or infect this tissue, causing lingering pain, sensitivity or swelling. Root canal treatment cleans out the damaged pulp, disinfects the canals and seals them so the tooth can stay in your mouth.
If you are in Normandale and have been told you may need a root canal, our Port Dover team can explain why, what the steps involve and what to expect afterward. We also discuss alternatives so you can decide with full information.

Signs you may need one
Pain that lingers after hot or cold, spontaneous throbbing, pain that wakes you at night and tenderness when biting can suggest the pulp is inflamed or infected. Sometimes pain eases suddenly if the nerve dies, but infection may still be present and spreading.
Swelling of the gum, a pimple-like bump that drains, darkening of the tooth and a bad taste can indicate infection. Some teeth needing root canals cause no symptoms and are discovered on x-rays. The dentist will test the tooth and explain the findings.
Diagnosis
Cold and electric tests, tapping, biting tests and x-rays help determine whether the pulp is healthy, inflamed or dead. The dentist looks for bone changes around the root tip that suggest infection. Your symptoms and history are part of the picture.
If root canal treatment is recommended, the dentist will explain the outlook for the tooth and the alternatives, such as extraction followed by replacement. Some complex cases are referred to an endodontist. You can ask about the expected number of visits and what restoration will follow.
The procedure
After numbing, a small sheet called a dental dam isolates the tooth. The dentist creates an opening, removes the pulp and cleans and shapes the canals with fine instruments. Disinfecting solutions help remove bacteria. Treatment may be completed in one visit or spread over two, depending on the tooth.
Once cleaned, the canals are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling closes the opening. Many back teeth benefit from a crown afterward to protect against fracture. The dentist will explain the recommended restoration for your tooth.
Recovery
Some tenderness is common for a few days and is usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Avoid chewing hard foods on the tooth until the final restoration is placed. Contact the office if swelling develops, pain worsens or the temporary filling comes out.
A tooth that has had a root canal can last many years with proper restoration and care. Brush, clean between teeth and attend regular checkups. If you grind, a night guard may help protect the tooth. Follow-up x-rays may be taken to check healing.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe your symptoms, including any swelling or fever. The team will arrange an assessment and explain how urgently the tooth should be treated.
Bring a medication list and any recent x-rays from another provider who may have examined the tooth.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The tooth is numbed, so most people feel pressure rather than pain during treatment. The procedure often relieves the pain caused by the infected or inflamed nerve.
Some are completed in one visit, while others need two or more. It depends on the tooth, the number of canals and whether infection is present.
Back teeth often benefit from a crown to prevent fracture. Front teeth may only need a filling. The dentist will recommend what suits your tooth.
Keeping your natural tooth is generally preferred when the outlook is good. Extraction may be recommended if the tooth cannot be restored. The dentist will discuss both.
Most succeed, but sometimes infection returns. Retreatment or other procedures may help. Regular checkups and a good restoration improve long-term success.
A crown covers a weakened tooth to restore strength and shape. Normandale patients can learn when crowns are advised and what fitting involves at our Port Dover office.
A dental abscess needs prompt attention. Normandale residents can learn the warning signs, when to seek emergency care and how our Port Dover team treats the source.
