Inside every tooth is soft tissue called pulp, containing nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach it, causing inflammation or infection. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals and seals them. It often relieves pain and allows a tooth that would otherwise need extraction to be kept.
Long Point patients with a painful tooth or a recommendation for root canal treatment can be assessed at our Port Dover office. Some cases are completed here and others may be referred to a specialist.

Signs you may need one
Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, spontaneous throbbing pain, pain that wakes you at night or tenderness when biting may point to pulp inflammation or infection. A swollen gum or pimple near the tooth suggests an abscess. These symptoms deserve prompt attention rather than waiting to see if they fade.
Sometimes a tooth with a dying nerve causes little pain. It may darken in colour, or an X-ray may show a change at the root tip during a routine exam. A tooth that was injured years ago can also develop problems later. Testing helps the dentist decide whether treatment is needed.
Diagnosis
The dentist may use cold tests, tapping and bite tests to see how the nerve and surrounding tissues respond. X-rays show the roots, canals and any bone changes. Together, these tests help confirm which tooth is involved and whether the pulp is inflamed, infected or no longer alive.
Not every tooth can or should be saved. The dentist considers how much healthy tooth remains, gum support and whether a crack extends into the root. You will hear the outlook for treatment, along with alternatives such as extraction and replacement, so you can make an informed choice.
The procedure
After the tooth is numbed, a small barrier called a dental dam is placed to keep it clean and dry. The dentist makes an opening in the tooth, removes the pulp and cleans and shapes each canal with fine instruments and disinfecting solutions. Treatment may take one or more visits depending on the tooth.
Once cleaned, the canals are filled with a sealing material. A temporary or permanent filling closes the opening. Back teeth in particular often need a crown afterward to protect them from fracture, since treated teeth can become more brittle over time.
Recovery
Some tenderness when biting is common for a few days. Follow the dentist’s advice on pain relief and avoid chewing hard foods on the tooth until it has been fully restored. Contact the office if pain worsens, swelling appears or the temporary filling comes out.
A crown or permanent filling is usually placed soon after treatment. Delaying this step can allow the tooth to crack or bacteria to re-enter. If you are leaving Long Point for part of the year, plan the final restoration before you go or coordinate with your other dentist.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to describe your symptoms and arrange an assessment. If root canal treatment is recommended, ask how many visits are likely and when the final restoration should follow.
Bring any X-rays or notes from another dentist, and mention medications, allergies and heart conditions before treatment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The tooth is numbed, so most people feel pressure rather than pain during treatment. Tenderness afterward is common for a few days and usually manageable with recommended pain relief.
Teeth that have had root canals, especially back teeth, can become more brittle. A crown helps protect against fracture. The dentist will advise whether your tooth needs one.
Antibiotics alone do not remove infection inside the tooth. Options are usually root canal treatment or extraction. The dentist will explain both so you can choose.
Many last for years or a lifetime with a good restoration and care. Success depends on the tooth, how well it is sealed and ongoing hygiene and checkups.
Some complex cases, such as curved or calcified canals, may be referred to an endodontist. The dentist will explain if referral is recommended and why it might benefit you.
A crown covers a tooth weakened by decay, cracks or a large filling. Long Point patients can learn how crowns are planned, fitted and maintained in Port Dover.
Throbbing pain, a gum bump or swelling near a tooth may mean an abscess. Long Point patients should call our Port Dover office promptly to discuss assessment.
