Inside every tooth is the pulp, a soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack, repeated dental work or an injury can allow bacteria to reach the pulp, causing inflammation or infection. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals inside the roots and seals them to prevent reinfection, allowing you to keep the tooth.
For Langton patients with a painful or infected tooth, the dentist at our Port Dover office will examine the tooth, take X-rays and run tests to determine whether root canal treatment is the right option. They will also discuss alternatives, the number of visits likely needed and how the tooth will be protected once treatment is finished.

Signs and diagnosis
Lingering pain after hot or cold, spontaneous throbbing, pain when biting, a darkening tooth, swelling of the gum or a small pimple-like bump near the tooth can all suggest the pulp is inflamed or infected. Some teeth needing root canal treatment cause no symptoms at all and are found during a routine exam or on X-rays taken for another reason.
The dentist may tap the tooth, apply cold, check the gums and compare the tooth with its neighbours. X-rays show changes around the root tip and the shape of the canals. Sometimes symptoms are confusing, and the dentist may need to monitor the tooth or refer you to a root canal specialist, called an endodontist, for further assessment.
Treatment steps
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, and a thin rubber sheet is placed to keep it clean and dry. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth so the dentist can reach the pulp. The damaged tissue is removed, and the canals are cleaned and shaped with fine instruments and disinfecting solutions to clear out bacteria.
Once the canals are clean, they are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling is placed in the opening. Treatment may be completed in one visit or spread over two or more, particularly if infection is present. The dentist will explain the plan for your tooth and what each visit is meant to accomplish.
Protecting the tooth
Teeth that have had root canal treatment, especially back teeth, can become brittle and are more likely to crack. A crown is often recommended to cover and protect the tooth. Front teeth with less damage may only need a filling. Delaying the final restoration increases the risk of fracture or reinfection, so try to complete it promptly.
If a tooth cannot be restored predictably or you prefer not to save it, extraction may be an option, followed by replacement with an implant, bridge or partial denture if desired. Ask the dentist to compare root canal treatment with these alternatives in terms of comfort, time, cost and long-term outcomes before you decide which path to take.
Recovery
Some tenderness, especially when biting, is common for a few days and usually responds to over-the-counter pain relief. Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth until the final restoration is in place. Call the office if you notice swelling, severe pain, a bite that feels high or if a temporary filling comes out before your next appointment.
With a good restoration and regular dental care, a root-treated tooth can last for many years. Brush and floss daily and keep routine checkups. The dentist may take follow-up X-rays to confirm healing around the root. If symptoms return, further treatment may still save the tooth, so report changes rather than waiting for them to worsen.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if you have lingering tooth pain, swelling or a tooth that has darkened. The dentist will examine the tooth and explain whether root canal treatment or another option is appropriate.
If swelling spreads or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care first, before arranging any dental treatment.

With local anaesthetic, most people feel little more than pressure during treatment, similar to having a filling. The procedure is often done to relieve the pain caused by infection. Some tenderness afterwards is common and usually short-lived.
Many root canals are completed in one or two visits, depending on the tooth, the complexity of the canals and whether infection is present. A separate appointment is usually needed for the final crown or filling.
Back teeth usually need a crown to protect them from cracking after treatment. Front teeth with minimal damage may only need a filling. The dentist will recommend the best restoration based on how much tooth structure remains.
No. Antibiotics can help control spreading infection, but they cannot reach bacteria inside the tooth’s canals. The source must be cleaned out with root canal treatment or the tooth removed to resolve the infection completely.
Occasionally, a root-treated tooth develops new symptoms due to reinfection, a crack or a missed canal. Contact the office. Retreatment by the dentist or a specialist may save the tooth, or other options will be discussed.
A crown covers a damaged or weakened tooth to restore strength and shape. Langton patients can learn when crowns are advised and what the visits involve.
A dental abscess is an infection that needs professional care. Langton patients can learn the warning signs, when to call and what treatment may involve.
