Inside each tooth is a soft core of nerves and blood vessels called the pulp. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach it, causing inflammation or infection. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, then seals them. Done well, it can relieve pain and allow you to keep a tooth that might otherwise need extraction.
Hagersville patients can have root canal treatment assessed and, where appropriate, carried out at our Port Dover office. Some cases are referred to an endodontist, and the dentist will explain why if that is recommended.

Signs you may need one
Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, spontaneous throbbing pain, pain that wakes you at night, tenderness when biting, a darkened tooth, swelling of the gum or face and a small bump on the gum that drains can all suggest the pulp is damaged. Describe exactly what you feel and when, since these details help the dentist with diagnosis.
Sometimes a tooth needing root canal treatment causes no symptoms at all, and the problem is found on an X-ray. An infection at the root tip can be present without pain. The dentist will explain the findings and why treatment is recommended, even if the tooth currently feels fine, and what may happen if it is left.
Diagnosis
The dentist uses cold tests, tapping, gum probing and X-rays to evaluate the tooth. Results help determine whether the pulp is mildly inflamed and may recover, irreversibly damaged or already infected. The tooth’s structure is also assessed, because a tooth needs enough healthy material left to be restored after root canal treatment.
If root canal treatment is recommended, the alternative is usually extraction. The dentist will discuss both options, including what replacing an extracted tooth would involve. For complex anatomy, retreatment of a previous root canal or difficult access, referral to an endodontist, a root canal specialist, may be suggested.
The procedure
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, and a thin rubber sheet called a dam isolates it to keep it clean and dry. The dentist makes a small opening, removes the damaged pulp and cleans and shapes the canals with fine instruments and disinfecting solutions. Treatment may be completed in one visit or spread over two, depending on the case.
Once clean, the canals are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling closes the access opening. If you are travelling from Hagersville, ask whether a second visit is likely so you can plan around it. You may feel numb for a few hours afterwards, so take care when eating.
After treatment
Tenderness when biting is common for a few days as surrounding tissues settle. Over-the-counter pain relief, taken as directed, usually helps. Chew on the other side until the final restoration is in place. Contact the office if you have severe pain, swelling that increases, an uneven bite or if the temporary filling comes out.
Back teeth that have had root canal treatment can become more brittle and are often crowned to protect them from fracture. The dentist will explain whether a crown is recommended and when. Delaying the final restoration increases the risk of the tooth breaking or becoming reinfected, so complete the plan promptly.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to describe your symptoms or book a root canal already recommended. Mention swelling, fever or severe pain so the team can assess urgency and schedule accordingly.
Bring any X-rays or referral notes from other dentists and a list of medications, including antibiotics you may have recently taken.

Local anaesthetic keeps the tooth numb during treatment, and many people find the experience similar to having a filling. Some soreness afterwards is common for a few days. Root canal treatment typically relieves the pain caused by the infection.
Some are completed in one visit, while others need two or more, especially if infection is significant or the anatomy is complex. A separate visit is often needed for a crown afterwards.
Back teeth usually benefit from a crown because they take heavy chewing forces and can become brittle. Front teeth may sometimes be restored with a filling. The dentist will recommend what suits your tooth.
Most root canals succeed, but occasionally infection persists or returns. Retreatment, minor surgery or extraction may then be considered. Completing the final restoration promptly and keeping regular checkups support long-term success.
Extraction is an option, but keeping your natural tooth helps preserve chewing, bone and neighbouring teeth. Replacing a missing tooth with an implant or bridge also involves time and cost. The dentist can compare both choices.
A crown covers and strengthens a weakened tooth. Hagersville patients can learn when crowns are recommended, how they are made and how to care for them.
