Saving the tooth from the inside

A root canal treats the problem inside the tooth so you can keep it.

Inside each tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, cracks, repeated dental work or injury can inflame or infect this tissue. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals and seals them, allowing the tooth to stay in place rather than being extracted.

If you have lingering tooth pain or swelling, Glen Meyer patients can have the tooth assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether root canal treatment is appropriate, what alternatives exist and how the tooth would be restored afterward to keep it working.

Signs to watch for

Not every toothache means you need a root canal.

  • Pain patterns that suggest nerve problems

Pain that lingers after hot or cold drinks, throbbing that wakes you at night, tenderness when biting or a dull ache that keeps returning can indicate an inflamed or infected pulp. Some teeth cause little pain at all, even when the nerve has died. Describing your symptoms in detail helps the dentist decide which tests are needed to understand what is going on.

  • Other signs of infection

Swelling of the gum or face, a pimple-like bump on the gum, a bad taste, darkening of the tooth or a tooth that feels raised can be signs of infection. Seek emergency medical care if swelling is spreading quickly or you have difficulty breathing or swallowing. Otherwise, call the office promptly so the tooth can be examined.

Diagnosis

The dentist confirms the cause before recommending treatment.

Testing the tooth

The dentist may test how the tooth responds to cold, tapping or biting pressure, and compare it with neighbouring teeth. X-rays help show decay, infection at the root tip and the shape of the canals. These findings help determine whether the pulp can heal, needs root canal treatment or whether the tooth cannot be saved.

Discussing options and alternatives

If root canal treatment is recommended, ask about the likely outcome, the number of visits and how the tooth will be restored. The main alternative is extraction, which may then require a bridge, implant or partial denture to replace the tooth. Some complex cases may be referred to an endodontist, a root canal specialist, for treatment.

The treatment

Modern root canal treatment is done under local anaesthetic.

  1. Cleaning and shaping the canals

The tooth is numbed, and a small protective sheet may be placed around it to keep it dry and clean. The dentist makes an opening in the tooth, removes the damaged pulp and carefully cleans and shapes the canals. Medication may be placed inside between visits if needed. Let the dentist know if you feel discomfort at any stage.

  2. Sealing and temporary protection

Once the canals are cleaned, they are filled and sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering. A temporary filling is usually placed in the opening. Some treatments are completed in one visit, while others take two or more. The dentist will explain the plan and how to care for the tooth between appointments, including what to avoid eating.

Restoring the tooth

The tooth needs protection once the canals are sealed.

Recovery in the days after

Mild tenderness for a few days after treatment is common and can usually be managed with pain relief used as directed. Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth until it is fully restored. Contact the office if pain increases, swelling develops or the temporary filling comes out, since the tooth may need prompt attention.

Why a final restoration is important

Teeth that have had root canal treatment, especially back teeth, can become more brittle and are prone to fracture. A crown or other permanent restoration is often recommended to protect the tooth. Delaying this step can lead to cracks or reinfection, so ask the dentist about timing and plan the restoration soon after treatment is finished.

Root canal questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does a root canal hurt?

The tooth is numbed during treatment, and many people find it no more uncomfortable than having a filling. Some tenderness afterward is common for a few days. Let the dentist know if you feel discomfort during treatment so they can adjust.

How long does a root canal take?

It depends on the tooth, the number of canals and whether infection is present. Some treatments are completed in one visit, while others need two or more. The dentist will give you an estimate after examining the tooth.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Often, yes, especially for back teeth, which carry heavy chewing forces. A crown helps protect the treated tooth from fracture. The dentist will recommend the most suitable restoration based on how much tooth structure remains.

Is it better to just pull the tooth?

Keeping your natural tooth is often preferred when it can be restored predictably. Extraction may be simpler at first but leaves a gap that may need replacing. The dentist will discuss both options, including long-term implications.

Can a tooth need a second root canal?

Occasionally a treated tooth develops new infection or does not heal fully. Retreatment, surgery or extraction may then be considered. Completing the final restoration promptly and maintaining good oral hygiene help reduce this risk considerably.
