Saving a tooth from the inside

A root canal treats the problem inside the tooth so it can stay.

Inside every tooth is the pulp, a soft tissue with nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack, repeated dental work or an injury can inflame or infect the pulp, causing pain, sensitivity or an abscess. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the canals inside the root and seals them, allowing you to keep the natural tooth rather than having it removed.

If you are experiencing tooth pain or have been told you may need a root canal, our Port Dover office can assess the tooth for Fishers Glen patients. The dentist will explain the findings, the procedure and alternatives, and whether a crown is likely to be needed afterward.

Signs you may need one

Symptoms vary, and some teeth give no warning.

  • Pain and sensitivity

Lingering pain after hot or cold, a throbbing toothache, pain when biting or tapping on a tooth, or pain that wakes you at night can indicate pulp inflammation or infection. Some people notice the pain spreads to the ear or jaw. These symptoms are worth having checked, as they can have several causes and early assessment keeps more options open.

  • Other signs

A darkening tooth, swelling of the gum, a pimple-like bump that drains or a bad taste near one tooth can also signal infection. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all, and the problem is found on an X-ray during a routine exam. The dentist will use tests and imaging to confirm whether the pulp is affected.

Diagnosis

The dentist confirms whether the pulp can recover.

Testing the tooth

Tests may include applying cold, tapping gently on the tooth and checking how it responds to biting. X-rays show the shape of the roots and any infection around them. The dentist uses this information to determine whether the pulp is reversibly inflamed, which might settle with a filling, or irreversibly damaged, which usually needs root canal treatment.

Discussing options

The dentist will explain whether the tooth can be saved, what root canal treatment involves and whether a crown will be needed afterward. Alternatives may include extraction and replacing the tooth. Ask about the outlook, the number of visits and anything that might affect success, such as cracks or the shape of the roots. A second opinion is always reasonable.

The procedure

Treatment is usually completed in one or two visits.

  1. Numbing and cleaning

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, and a small sheet called a rubber dam is placed to keep the area clean and dry. The dentist makes an opening in the top of the tooth, removes the damaged pulp and carefully cleans and shapes the canals using fine instruments. Disinfecting solutions help clear bacteria from inside the root.

  2. Filling and sealing

The cleaned canals are filled with a rubber-like material and sealed. A temporary or permanent filling closes the opening. Some teeth with complex root shapes may be referred to an endodontist, a root canal specialist. The dentist will explain if a referral is recommended and why, and what the next steps are. You can raise a hand for a break at any time.

Recovery and crown

A treated tooth often needs extra protection.

The days after treatment

Some tenderness for a few days is common, especially when biting. Over-the-counter pain relief, as directed and suitable for your health, usually helps. Avoid chewing hard foods on the tooth until it is fully restored. Contact the office if pain increases, swelling develops or the temporary filling comes out before your next visit. Soft foods help.

Protecting the tooth

Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often more prone to fracture and usually need a crown to protect them. Front teeth may sometimes be restored with a filling. The dentist will recommend the right restoration and timing. Keeping regular checkups helps monitor the tooth over the long term. Do not delay the final restoration.

Root canal questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does a root canal hurt?

Local anaesthetic is used to numb the tooth, so most people feel pressure rather than pain during treatment. Root canal treatment is often done to relieve pain. Some tenderness afterward is common and usually settles within a few days.

How long does a root canal take?

Many root canals are completed in one or two appointments, depending on the tooth and the extent of infection. Molars with several roots may take longer. The dentist will give you an estimate after assessing the tooth.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth usually need a crown to protect them from fracture after root canal treatment. Front teeth may sometimes be restored with a filling. The dentist will recommend the right option based on how much tooth structure remains.

What is the alternative to a root canal?

The main alternative is removing the tooth. After an extraction, replacement with an implant, bridge or denture may be considered. Saving the natural tooth is often preferred when possible, but the dentist will discuss the pros and cons.

Can a root canal fail?

Most root canals succeed, but sometimes infection returns due to complex anatomy, cracks or new decay. Retreatment or other procedures may be possible. Keep regular checkups and report any return of pain or swelling. Early follow-up gives more options.
