Inside each tooth is soft tissue called pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, cracks or injury can cause the pulp to become inflamed or infected, leading to pain, swelling or an abscess. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans the canals and seals them to save the tooth.
If you are in Cultus and have a toothache or have been told you may need a root canal, our Port Dover dentists can assess the tooth and explain what treatment involves. We will discuss comfort, the number of visits and how the tooth will be restored afterward.

Diagnosis
Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, spontaneous throbbing pain, pain when biting, swelling of the gum and a darkened tooth can suggest pulp problems. Some teeth with infected pulp cause no symptoms and are found on X-rays. Describe your symptoms in detail to help the dentist make an accurate diagnosis. Note when the pain started.
Tests such as applying cold, tapping gently or checking how the tooth responds to biting help the dentist judge pulp health. X-rays show the roots and any infection around them. The dentist will explain what the findings mean and why root canal treatment is being recommended. Ask to see the X-ray if that helps you follow the explanation.
Weighing options
The main alternative to root canal treatment is extraction. Keeping your natural tooth often helps maintain your bite and avoids the need for replacement. However, if the tooth is badly broken or has a poor outlook, extraction may be suggested. Ask about the expected success and long-term prognosis. The answer often depends on how much healthy tooth is left.
Some root canals are complex because of curved or narrow canals, previous treatment or difficult access. In these cases, the dentist may refer you to an endodontist, a root canal specialist. Ask who will provide the treatment and who will place the final restoration. Knowing this ahead of time helps you plan trips and avoid gaps between stages of care.
The procedure
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, and a small rubber sheet isolates it to keep it dry and clean. The dentist creates an opening, removes the pulp and cleans and shapes the canals. Most people feel pressure rather than pain. Tell the dentist if you feel discomfort so they can pause. Breaks to rest your jaw are fine.
The canals are filled with a sealing material, and a temporary filling closes the opening. Some teeth are treated in one visit, while others need two. Avoid chewing hard foods on that side until the final restoration is placed. Follow any instructions about pain relief. If a second visit is needed, medication may be placed inside the tooth between appointments.
Afterward
Some tenderness for a few days is common, especially when biting. Over-the-counter pain relief usually helps. Contact the office if pain is severe, swelling appears or the temporary filling comes out. These may need prompt attention to prevent further problems. Most people find that the pain they had before treatment eases noticeably within a few days, even if the tooth stays a little tender to bite on.
Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often more prone to fracture and usually benefit from a crown. Front teeth may only need a filling. Have the final restoration placed promptly to protect the tooth. Regular checkups help monitor healing and the long-term health of the tooth. A follow-up X-ray may be taken.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if you have tooth pain or have been told you need a root canal. Describe your symptoms so the team can schedule an appropriate assessment.
Ask how many visits are likely and when the crown would be placed. Bring X-rays or a referral from another dentist if you have one.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The tooth is numbed, so most people feel pressure rather than pain during treatment. Many find that root canal treatment relieves the pain they had before. Some tenderness for a few days afterward is normal.
Some are completed in one visit, while others need two or more, especially if infection is present. The dentist will explain the plan for your tooth and how long each visit is likely to take.
Back teeth usually benefit from a crown to protect them from fracture. Front teeth may only need a filling. The dentist will recommend what is best and explain the risk of waiting too long to restore it.
Most root canals are successful, but sometimes infection returns. Retreatment or other procedures may be options. Regular checkups help detect problems early. A well-sealed final restoration also lowers the chance of bacteria getting back into the canals.
Extraction is an option, but replacing the tooth with an implant, bridge or denture may be needed to maintain your bite. Discuss the trade-offs with the dentist, including the time and cost of replacing the tooth.
A dental crown covers and strengthens a damaged tooth. Cultus patients can learn when crowns are advised, how many visits they take and how to care for one.
A dental abscess is an infection that needs professional care. Cultus patients can learn the warning signs, when to call 911 and how our Port Dover team helps.
