Saving a troubled tooth

Root canal treatment removes the problem from inside the tooth.

Inside each tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can cause this tissue to become inflamed or infected, leading to pain, swelling or an abscess. Root canal treatment removes the damaged pulp, cleans the canals and seals them so the tooth can be kept rather than extracted.

Bloomsburg patients who may need root canal treatment can have the tooth examined at our Port Dover office. The dentist will confirm the diagnosis, explain the options, including extraction as an alternative, and outline what the treatment involves and how the tooth will be restored afterward.

Diagnosis

The dentist confirms whether the pulp is involved.

Symptoms that suggest pulp problems

Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, spontaneous throbbing, pain when biting, swelling near a tooth or a pimple-like bump on the gum may suggest a pulp problem. Some teeth show few symptoms. Pain alone does not confirm the need for a root canal, so the dentist will examine the tooth carefully before making any recommendation.

Testing and X-rays

Tests may include checking the tooth’s response to cold, tapping and biting. X-rays show the root and surrounding bone and can reveal infection at the tip of the root. These findings help the dentist determine whether the pulp can recover, whether root canal treatment is needed or whether another approach would be more appropriate for you.

Options

Root canal treatment is one of several options.

Saving the tooth

If the tooth can be restored and has good bone support, root canal treatment may allow you to keep it. A saved tooth helps maintain your bite and avoids the need for a replacement. The dentist will explain the likely outcome and what restoration will be needed afterward, so you understand the full picture before deciding.

When extraction is considered

If the tooth is severely damaged, cracked below the gumline or has poor support, extraction may be suggested. Removing the tooth means considering replacement options such as an implant, bridge or partial denture. The dentist will discuss the pros and cons of each path so you can make an informed choice without feeling rushed. Questions are always welcome.

The treatment

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic.

  1. Cleaning and shaping the canals

The tooth is numbed, and a small protective sheet is placed to keep it clean and dry. An opening is made to reach the pulp, which is removed. The canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected. Treatment may take one or more appointments depending on the tooth and the extent of infection. Complex cases may be referred to an endodontist.

  2. Sealing and temporary protection

Once the canals are clean, they are filled with a sealing material. A temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth until the final restoration. Some tenderness for a few days is common. The dentist will explain how to manage discomfort and when to call if symptoms worsen rather than improve over the following days.

Restoring the tooth

A treated tooth needs protection to last.

  • The final restoration

After root canal treatment, the tooth can become more brittle, especially back teeth. A crown or other durable restoration is often recommended to protect it from breaking. The dentist will explain the timing and options. Delaying the final restoration can increase the risk of fracture or reinfection, so keep follow-up appointments as advised by the dentist.

  • Long-term care

Brush and clean between your teeth as usual, and attend regular checkups. X-rays may be taken over time to confirm healing around the root. Contact the office if pain, swelling or a bump on the gum returns. With good care and a proper restoration, a treated tooth can function well for many years to come.

Planning your appointment

When a root canal has been mentioned.

Call our Port Dover office from Bloomsburg to describe your symptoms or arrange a second look at a tooth another dentist has flagged. The team can discuss how soon you should be seen.

If you have recent X-rays or a referral from another dentist, ask whether they can be sent ahead to help with planning.

Root canal questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Local anaesthetic is used to numb the tooth, so the procedure itself should be comfortable. Some tenderness afterward is common and usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. The dentist will give you specific aftercare advice.

How many appointments will it take?

Some root canals are completed in one visit, while others need two or more, depending on the tooth and the infection. A separate appointment is usually needed for the final crown or restoration afterward, once healing is confirmed.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Often yes, especially for back teeth, which handle heavy chewing forces. A crown helps protect the treated tooth from breaking. The dentist will explain whether a crown or another restoration is recommended for your tooth.

Can I just have the tooth pulled instead?

Extraction is an option, but it leaves a gap that may affect chewing and neighbouring teeth. Replacement options can be considered. The dentist will explain the pros and cons of saving versus removing the tooth.

What if the tooth hurts after treatment?

Some tenderness for a few days is normal. If pain increases, swelling develops or the bite feels high, contact the office so the dentist can check the tooth and determine whether further care is needed.
