Fillings do not last forever. Over the years they can wear, crack, stain or develop gaps at the edges where new decay may begin. Older silver amalgam fillings can also darken the tooth structure around them. Some people want to replace visible fillings for appearance, while others need replacement because a restoration is genuinely failing and putting the tooth at risk.
Windham Centre patients with old or discoloured fillings can have them evaluated at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check each filling individually, explain whether replacement is truly recommended and discuss materials that suit the tooth, your bite and your goals for how your smile looks.

Assess the filling
Cracks, chips, rough edges, gaps at the margin, recurrent decay underneath and new sensitivity can all indicate that a filling is failing. The dentist examines each filling closely and may take X-rays to look for decay hidden beneath it. Food repeatedly catching around a filling, or floss shredding at one spot, can also be a sign that a gap has developed.
A filling that is intact, well sealed and free of decay may not need replacing, even if it is old or dark. Removing a sound filling always takes away some healthy tooth structure as well. The dentist will explain the benefits and the risks so you can make an informed decision, particularly when the main reason for replacement is cosmetic rather than health.
Choose a material
Composite resin is tooth-coloured and bonds directly to the tooth, which makes it a popular replacement for small to moderate fillings. It can be shaded to blend with the surrounding enamel so the repair is hard to spot. Composite may stain or wear over time, and whether it is suitable depends on the size of the old filling and where in the mouth it sits.
Large fillings may leave a tooth weakened once they are removed. In these cases a ceramic inlay, onlay or crown may provide better strength and protection than a large direct filling. The dentist will consider how much healthy tooth remains, how your teeth meet and any grinding habit when recommending the most appropriate option for that particular tooth.
Replacement visit
The tooth is numbed and the old filling is carefully removed. The dentist then checks for decay or cracks underneath and removes any damaged structure that is found. If the decay turns out to be deep, the dentist will discuss whether additional treatment might be needed before going further. The tooth is then cleaned and prepared to receive the new material.
For composite, the material is placed in thin layers and hardened with a curing light, then shaped and polished to match your bite. For lab-made restorations, impressions or scans are taken and a temporary is placed until the final piece is ready. Either way, your bite is checked and adjusted before you leave so chewing feels natural.
Aftercare
Some sensitivity to cold or pressure is common for a short time after a filling is replaced, especially when the old one was deep. If it lingers beyond a couple of weeks, gets worse or your bite feels uneven, contact the office. The dentist can check the new filling, make small adjustments and recommend steps to ease any ongoing sensitivity.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss every day, paying attention to the edges of your fillings. Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks. Avoid chewing ice or other hard objects. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor your fillings and catch wear or new decay early, which can help you avoid larger and more costly repairs later.
Planning your appointment
Book an exam at our Port Dover office to have old or stained fillings checked. Windham Centre patients can mention any sensitivity, rough edges or cosmetic concerns when they call, so the right type of visit is scheduled.
Bring recent X-rays if you have them, and let the team know about any allergies or sensitivities to dental materials you have experienced before.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
If they are intact and not causing problems, replacement may not be necessary. If they are cracked, leaking or you would prefer a tooth-coloured appearance, the dentist can discuss your options and the trade-offs involved in removing them.
Composite can be shaded to blend closely with your natural teeth. If you are planning to whiten, it is usually best to do that first, so the new filling can be matched to your brighter shade rather than your current one.
Removing a filling also removes a small amount of tooth structure. For large fillings, the dentist may recommend an onlay or crown instead, to protect what remains and reduce the risk of the tooth cracking under pressure.
Lifespan depends on the material, the size of the filling and your habits, such as grinding or frequent snacking. Many last for years with good care. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor their condition and spot early wear.
The tooth is numbed during the procedure, so most people feel little more than pressure and vibration. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually temporary. Contact the office if discomfort persists or seems to be increasing.
