Fillings do not last forever. Over time they can wear, crack, stain or develop gaps at the edges where bacteria can enter. Old silver fillings may darken teeth or simply be noticeable when you smile. Deciding whether to replace a filling depends on its condition, the health of the tooth around it and your goals.
Walsh patients can have their old fillings assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check each one, explain which are failing and which are still sound, and discuss tooth-coloured replacement options and costs so you can decide what makes sense now and what can wait.

Assessment
Cracks, chipped edges, gaps between the filling and the tooth, decay underneath, new sensitivity or a filling that shreds floss are all signs it may need replacing. X-rays help detect decay hidden under or beside fillings that cannot be seen in the mouth. The dentist will show you what they see, using photos or X-rays, so the recommendation makes sense to you.
A filling that is intact, well sealed and causing no problems may last for many more years. Replacing a healthy filling removes a little more tooth structure each time, which weakens the tooth over a lifetime. If your main concern is appearance, the dentist will discuss the trade-offs carefully before recommending any replacement, so you can decide with the facts.
Options
Tooth-coloured composite resin bonds to the tooth and can be shaded to match its natural colour closely. It suits many small to medium fillings in both front and back teeth. Composite may need replacement over time and can pick up stain, but it blends well and often preserves more healthy tooth than older filling methods required.
Large old fillings may have left the remaining walls of the tooth thin and weakened. In these cases an inlay, onlay or crown might give better long-term strength than another large filling. The dentist will explain why a particular option is recommended, based on how much healthy tooth remains and how heavily that tooth is used for chewing.
The procedure
The tooth is numbed and the old filling is carefully removed. Any decay found underneath is cleaned out. If the cavity turns out to be deeper or larger than expected, the dentist may pause to discuss whether a larger restoration is needed instead. Suitable precautions are used when removing older silver fillings, and you can ask what they are.
For composite, the tooth is prepared, the resin is applied in thin layers and each layer is hardened with a curing light. The filling is shaped to your bite and polished smooth. Ask whether several fillings can be replaced at one appointment, which can reduce the number of trips from Walsh when it is practical and comfortable for you.
Afterwards
Some sensitivity to cold or pressure is common for a few days, especially after replacing large fillings close to the nerve. If your bite feels high, or the sensitivity persists beyond a couple of weeks, contact the office so the filling can be checked and adjusted. Small bite adjustments are quick and usually solve the problem.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth and limit frequent sugary snacks. Rinse with water after coffee or tea to reduce staining of composite. Regular exams let the dentist monitor your fillings and catch any problems early, before they need more extensive repair such as a crown or root canal treatment later on.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an exam focused on your existing fillings. Mention any sensitivity, broken edges or cosmetic concerns so the dentist can plan the assessment and allow enough time.
Bring previous X-rays if available, and let us know if you would like to prioritize teeth that show when you smile.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Not necessarily. Sound fillings may last for years, and replacing them removes some tooth structure each time. The dentist will check each one and recommend replacement only where there is a clinical or reasonable cosmetic reason.
Health organizations generally consider intact silver fillings safe for most people. If you have concerns, discuss them openly with the dentist, who can explain the current evidence and your options for replacement if you prefer.
Composite is shaded to blend with the surrounding teeth. If you plan to whiten, do so first, since composite does not change colour with whitening treatments and would otherwise stand out against your brighter teeth.
Lifespan varies with size, location, bite forces and home care. Many last for years. Regular checkups help identify wear early, so problems can be addressed before they become more extensive, painful or costly to fix.
Often, depending on their location, size and your comfort. The dentist may group teeth on the same side of the mouth so only one side is numb. Ask about this when planning treatment so fewer trips are needed.
From fillings to ceramic crowns, tooth-coloured restorations repair teeth discreetly. Walsh patients can compare options in Port Dover and what each involves.
