Fillings do not last forever. Over years of chewing, they can wear, crack, stain or start leaking at the edges, allowing new decay underneath. Some people also want to replace dark silver fillings with tooth-coloured material for appearance. Not every old filling needs replacing, though, and removing a sound filling always takes away some healthy tooth structure.
If you are in Vanessa and wondering about your old fillings, the dentist at our Port Dover office can examine them and explain which, if any, should be replaced. The decision is based on the condition of each filling and tooth, your goals for appearance and what is best for the tooth over the long term.

When to replace
Fillings may need replacement when they are cracked, chipped, worn down, loose, leaking at the edges or have new decay underneath. Sensitivity, food catching or a rough edge can be clues. X-rays and close examination help the dentist see problems that are not visible. In these cases, replacing the filling protects the tooth from further damage.
Some people want to replace stained composite or dark amalgam fillings with tooth-coloured material, especially on visible teeth. This is reasonable, but the dentist will explain that removing a sound filling also removes some tooth structure. You can weigh the cosmetic benefit against the impact on the tooth and decide together which fillings to replace.
Material choices
Composite resin is a common choice for replacing small to medium fillings. It is bonded to the tooth and shaded to match, so it blends in naturally. Composite can stain over time and may wear faster than some materials in heavy biting areas. The dentist will explain how long it is likely to last in your situation.
When an old filling is very large or the tooth has cracks, a bigger restoration may be safer. An inlay or onlay can rebuild part of the tooth with porcelain or composite, while a crown covers the whole tooth. These options offer more strength but involve more visits and cost. The dentist will explain why one is recommended.
The procedure
The tooth is numbed, and the old filling is carefully removed. Any decay underneath is cleaned out, and the remaining tooth is checked for cracks. If amalgam is being removed, the dentist will use appropriate techniques, such as suction and isolation. The tooth is then prepared for the new material, which is chosen to suit the size of the repair.
For composite, the material is placed in layers, shaped and hardened with a curing light. The dentist checks your bite and polishes the surface smooth. If an inlay, onlay or crown is needed, impressions are taken and a temporary is placed until the final restoration is ready at a second appointment, usually a couple of weeks later.
Afterward
Some sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common for a few days after a filling is replaced, especially if it was large or deep. It usually settles on its own. If your bite feels high, sensitivity worsens or the tooth aches, call the office. A small bite adjustment often solves the problem quickly and comfortably.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth every day and limit frequent sugary snacks to reduce the risk of new decay around the edges. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor fillings and replace them only when necessary, rather than all at once, which protects more of your natural tooth.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an exam and mention any fillings that concern you. The dentist will assess them, explain which need replacing and discuss materials and timing that suit you.
Note any sensitivity, rough edges or food catching around fillings, and mention whether your main concern is health or appearance.

Not necessarily. Sound amalgam fillings can last many years, and removing them takes away some healthy tooth structure. The dentist will assess each filling and recommend replacement only when there is a clear reason, or discuss cosmetic replacement if you want it.
It varies with size, location, material and habits. Some last many years, while others need replacing sooner. Regular checkups help catch wear or leakage before it causes bigger problems, and the dentist can tell you which fillings are showing their age.
The tooth is numbed during the procedure, so most people feel little discomfort. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles within days. Call the office if pain persists or your bite feels uneven afterward.
Sometimes surface stains can be polished away. If the stain is deeper or the filling is worn, replacement may be recommended. The dentist will explain what is possible for each filling, and whether polishing alone would give a result you are happy with.
The dentist uses appropriate techniques to remove amalgam safely. If you have specific concerns about removal, discuss them before treatment so the dentist can explain the process and precautions. Replacement is generally advised only when a filling has a problem.
