Fillings do not last forever. Over time, they can wear, chip, discolour or develop gaps at the edges where decay can start. Older silver amalgam fillings may also look dark through the tooth, which bothers some people cosmetically. Replacing a filling removes some tooth structure each time, so the decision should be made thoughtfully.
If you are in Selkirk and have fillings that look stained or feel rough, the dentist at our Port Dover office can examine them and explain whether replacement is advisable for health reasons, cosmetic reasons or both. Sometimes monitoring an intact filling is the more conservative and sensible choice.

Assessing the filling
Cracks, chips, worn areas, gaps or dark lines at the edges, decay underneath and sensitivity or pain around a filling are reasons to consider replacement. X-rays may reveal decay not visible in the mouth. Food catching repeatedly or a rough edge your tongue notices can also suggest the filling is breaking down and may need attention.
An older filling that is intact, sealed and causing no problems may not need replacing simply because of its age. Each replacement removes a little more of the tooth and carries a small risk of irritating the nerve. The dentist will explain the condition of each filling and whether replacing it now offers a real benefit.
Cosmetic concerns
Amalgam fillings can make teeth look grey, and older composite fillings may stain or yellow over time. If these are visible when you smile or talk, replacing them with tooth-coloured composite or porcelain may improve the appearance. The dentist will discuss whether the improvement is likely to be noticeable and worthwhile for each tooth.
Tooth-coloured materials can blend well, but they may also stain gradually. Very large fillings might be better replaced with an onlay or crown for strength. If you plan to whiten your teeth, it is usually best to do so before replacing visible fillings so the new material can match the lighter shade.
The procedure
The tooth is numbed and the old filling is removed. Any decay found underneath is cleaned out. Sometimes the cavity is larger than expected once the old material is removed, and the dentist may discuss whether a filling is still the best option. Precautions are used to manage debris during removal of older materials.
A new tooth-coloured filling is placed and shaped to restore the tooth, or impressions are taken for an inlay, onlay or crown if more coverage is needed. The bite is checked and the restoration polished. Mild sensitivity for a short period is common, but contact the office if it persists or worsens over the following days.
Looking after it
Wait until numbness fades before eating to avoid biting your lip or cheek. If your bite feels high or uneven once the anaesthetic wears off, call the office so it can be adjusted. Some temperature sensitivity may occur for a short time, especially with deeper fillings, and usually settles as the tooth recovers.
Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and limit frequent sugary snacks to protect the edges of the new fillings. Avoid biting ice or hard objects. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor all your fillings and recommend replacement only when there is a clear reason, helping preserve as much natural tooth as possible.
Planning your appointment
Book an exam at our Port Dover office and mention the fillings that concern you. The dentist can assess their condition and explain whether replacement is recommended now or later.
If you plan to whiten your teeth, mention it, so the order of treatment can be planned to match colours properly.

Not necessarily. Intact fillings without decay or damage may be fine to leave in place. Each replacement removes some tooth structure. The dentist will assess each filling and recommend replacement only where there is a health or cosmetic benefit.
Signs include cracks, chips, dark lines at the edges, food catching, sensitivity or pain. Some problems are only visible on X-rays. Regular checkups allow the dentist to spot issues early, before larger repairs or root canal treatment become necessary.
Tooth-coloured materials are shaded to blend with your teeth. If you plan to whiten, do it first so the new filling can match the lighter shade. The dentist will discuss colour matching during the appointment so you know what to expect.
The tooth is numbed, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles within days. Contact the office if discomfort persists or increases, as the tooth may need to be checked.
Yes. If the filling is very large or the tooth is weakened, an inlay, onlay or crown may be recommended for better long-term protection. The dentist will explain why, and compare the options with you before treatment.
