Fillings do not last forever. Over years of chewing, they can wear, chip, crack or leak at the edges, allowing new decay to form underneath. Older metal or composite fillings can also become stained or simply look out of place. Replacing them can restore the tooth’s health, improve appearance or both, but only when there is a good reason to do so.
Pine Grove patients wondering about their older fillings can have them assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain which fillings truly need replacing and which are still doing their job well.

When to replace
Fillings with cracks, open margins, new decay underneath, chips or significant wear may need replacing to protect the tooth. Sensitivity, food trapping or a rough edge can be signs of a problem. The dentist will examine the filling and may take X-rays to see whether decay has formed beneath it.
Some people want to replace visible metal or discoloured composite fillings for a more natural look. This can be reasonable, but replacing a sound filling removes a little more tooth structure each time. The dentist will discuss the trade-offs so you can make an informed decision about cosmetic replacement.
Choosing materials
Small and moderate fillings are often replaced with tooth-coloured composite resin, which bonds to the tooth and can be shade-matched. It is completed in a single visit. For front teeth, composite can blend well with surrounding enamel. The dentist will explain how long it is expected to last in your situation.
Very large old fillings may leave too little tooth for a new filling to be strong. In these cases, an inlay, onlay or crown may be recommended to protect the tooth. The decision is often made once the old material is removed and the dentist can see the remaining structure clearly.
The procedure
The tooth is numbed and the old filling is carefully removed. Any decay underneath is cleaned away. If the old filling is metal amalgam, the dentist will use suction and other measures to manage debris. Let the dentist know about any concerns you have regarding the removal process.
Once the tooth is clean, a new composite filling is layered and hardened with a curing light, or a temporary is placed while an inlay, onlay or crown is made. The dentist checks your bite and polishes the surface. Sensitivity may occur for a short time afterward.
After replacement
Mild sensitivity to cold or pressure is common for a few days, especially with deeper fillings. If the bite feels high or pain persists, call the office for an adjustment. Wait until numbness fades before eating to avoid biting your cheek or tongue.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth every day and limit frequent sugary snacks. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor fillings and catch problems early. If you plan whitening, do it before replacing visible fillings, as composite will not change colour afterward.
Planning your appointment
Book an examination at our Port Dover office and mention which fillings concern you. The dentist will assess them and explain whether replacement is recommended or optional.
If whitening is in your plans, mention it when booking so treatments can be sequenced. Bring any recent X-rays from a previous dentist.

Not necessarily. Sound metal fillings may continue working well for years. Replacing them removes some tooth structure. The dentist will examine each filling and recommend replacement only when there is a clear benefit.
Signs include sensitivity, a rough edge, food catching, visible cracks or dark staining at the edges. Many problems are only visible on X-rays, so regular checkups help catch them before decay spreads.
Surface staining on composite can sometimes be polished away. Deeper discolouration may need the filling to be replaced. The dentist can assess which option is suitable for your filling.
The tooth is numbed, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is normal and usually settles within days.
Lifespan depends on material, size, bite forces and home care. A well-placed filling with good care can last many years. The dentist can discuss expectations for your specific tooth.
Composite, ceramic and other tooth-coloured materials repair teeth discreetly. Pine Grove patients can compare options by strength, longevity and appearance.
Composite fillings repair decay with tooth-coloured material. Pine Grove patients can read how the filling is placed, how long it lasts and how to care for it.
