Fillings do not last forever. Over time they can wear, chip, discolour or develop gaps at the edges where bacteria can enter. Some people want to replace dark metal fillings for cosmetic reasons, while others need replacement because of decay underneath or cracks in the surrounding tooth. Each situation calls for a slightly different conversation.
If you are in Normandale and wondering whether your older fillings should be updated, our Port Dover dentist can examine them and explain what is happening. We will tell you which ones are sound, which are failing and what replacement would involve.

Assess the fillings
Cracks in the filling or tooth, gaps at the margins, new decay underneath, chipped edges and fillings that have worn significantly are common reasons for replacement. Sensitivity or food catching around a filling can also signal a problem. X-rays help detect decay hidden beneath older restorations.
Some people dislike the appearance of dark metal fillings or stained tooth-coloured fillings. Replacing them can improve appearance, but removing a sound filling also removes some healthy tooth. The dentist will explain the trade-offs so you can decide whether cosmetic replacement is worthwhile for you.
Choose a material
Small to moderate fillings are often replaced with tooth-coloured composite, which bonds to the tooth and can be shaded to blend in. Composite works well in many situations, though very large restorations or heavy bite forces may call for a stronger option.
When an old filling is large or the tooth has cracks, an inlay, onlay or crown may provide better support. These restorations are made outside the mouth and bonded or cemented in place. The dentist will recommend what is suitable based on how much healthy tooth remains.
The appointment
After numbing, the dentist removes the old filling material and any decay beneath it. The tooth is inspected for cracks. If you have concerns about the removal of older metal fillings, ask the dentist to explain the precautions taken during the procedure.
For composite, the new material is placed in layers, cured and polished. For larger restorations, a temporary may be placed while the final one is made. The dentist checks the bite and makes adjustments so the new restoration feels comfortable when you chew.
Aftercare
Some sensitivity to cold or biting can occur after replacement and usually fades. If it worsens or does not settle, contact the office. A bite that feels high should be adjusted. Deep fillings sometimes irritate the nerve, so the dentist will want to know about persistent discomfort.
Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep sugary snacks to mealtimes. Composite can stain with coffee, tea or tobacco, so rinse after dark drinks. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor margins and catch wear or decay early.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and mention which fillings concern you and why. The dentist will examine them and explain which, if any, need replacing and in what order.
If you are replacing fillings for appearance, bring photos or describe the look you hope to achieve.

Not necessarily. Sound fillings may not need replacing. The dentist will assess each one and explain whether replacement is recommended or optional.
Ask the dentist to explain the precautions used during removal. Replacement decisions are usually based on the condition of the filling and the tooth.
Some sensitivity is common and often fades. Contact the office if it worsens or persists so the tooth can be checked.
Sometimes surface stains can be polished away. Deeper discolouration usually requires replacement. The dentist will advise based on the filling.
It depends on their size and location and your comfort. The dentist may suggest grouping teeth in the same area to reduce the number of appointments.
Composite fillings, ceramic inlays and crowns can repair teeth while blending in. Normandale patients can compare tooth-coloured options at our Port Dover office.
