Fillings do not last forever. Over the years, they can wear down, chip, stain, develop gaps at the edges or allow decay to form beneath them. Some people also want to replace older metal or discoloured fillings for appearance. Deciding whether to replace a filling involves weighing its condition, the health of the tooth and your personal goals carefully.
Nixon patients can have older fillings assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check each one, explain whether replacement is recommended for clinical or cosmetic reasons and describe the options, including tooth-coloured materials, so you can make a decision that fits your mouth and your priorities.

Assessing old fillings
Sensitivity, food catching around a filling, a rough edge, visible cracks, dark lines along the margins or a filling that feels loose can all be signs of trouble. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all, and problems are found during a routine exam or on X-rays. Mention any changes you have noticed around older fillings, even if they seem minor or come and go.
The dentist examines the edges of each filling for gaps, checks for fractures in the filling and the surrounding tooth and may use X-rays to look for decay underneath. Staining alone is not always a sign of failure, since some fillings discolour over time without leaking. The dentist will explain what they find and whether action is needed now or can wait.
Reasons to replace
Replacement is usually recommended when a filling is cracked, leaking, has decay underneath or no longer supports the tooth well. Leaving a failing filling can allow decay to spread or the tooth to fracture. In these cases, the dentist will explain the urgency and the best material for the repair, which may be a new filling, an inlay, onlay or crown.
Some people want to replace sound fillings because of how they look, especially visible metal or stained fillings. This is a personal choice. Because removing a filling also removes some tooth structure, the dentist will discuss the trade-offs. If the main goal is appearance, ask whether other approaches, or replacing only the most visible fillings, might meet your goals.
The replacement visit
The tooth is numbed, and the dentist carefully removes the old filling material along with any decay underneath. The tooth is then cleaned and shaped for the new restoration. Sometimes the cavity is larger than expected once the old filling is out, and the dentist will explain if a different type of restoration is needed. You can ask questions throughout the visit.
For tooth-coloured composite, the material is applied in layers, hardened with a curing light, shaped and polished. The dentist checks your bite to make sure it feels even. If a larger restoration is needed, impressions may be taken for an inlay, onlay or crown. You will receive instructions on aftercare and what to expect once the numbness wears off.
Looking after it
Mild sensitivity to cold or pressure is common for a short time after a filling is replaced. If your bite feels high or sensitivity increases instead of fading, contact the office so the dentist can check the filling. Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated side until the numbness wears off, to protect your cheek and tongue from accidental bites.
Brush twice daily, clean between your teeth and keep regular checkups. Composite can stain gradually from coffee, tea and tobacco, so rinsing after these helps. Avoid biting hard objects such as ice or pens. Regular exams allow the dentist to monitor your restorations and recommend replacement only when it is actually needed, rather than on a fixed timetable.
Planning your appointment
Book an exam at our Port Dover office and mention any fillings that concern you, whether for comfort or appearance. The dentist will assess their condition and explain your options before any work is planned.
If you are considering whitening, mention it first, since new tooth-coloured fillings are best matched after whitening is complete and settled.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Not necessarily. Fillings in good condition may not need replacing, and removing them also removes some tooth structure. The dentist will assess each filling and discuss whether replacement is advisable for clinical or cosmetic reasons, so you can decide which, if any, to change.
Dark edges can be caused by staining, wear or a gap where decay may be forming. The dentist will examine the area and may use X-rays to determine whether the filling is leaking or simply discoloured. The answer guides whether replacement is needed.
Composite is shaded to blend with your natural teeth. It may stain slightly over time, especially with coffee, tea or tobacco. If you plan to whiten, it is best to do that first so the new filling matches your final shade.
The tooth is numbed before the old filling is removed, so the procedure should be comfortable. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually fades within days. Let the team know if discomfort persists so they can check the tooth and your bite.
Sometimes a small chip or worn area can be repaired without removing the whole filling. The dentist will assess whether a repair is appropriate or whether full replacement would be more reliable for the long-term health of the tooth.
Tooth-coloured fillings, inlays, onlays and crowns repair teeth while blending in. Nixon patients can compare materials and learn how each is cared for.
Composite fillings repair decay with tooth-coloured material. Nixon patients can see how cavities are found, what the visit involves and how to care for it.
