Fillings do not last forever. Over years of chewing, they can wear, chip, develop gaps at the edges or become stained. Metal fillings may darken the surrounding tooth, and older tooth-coloured fillings can yellow. Some people want to replace them for appearance, while others need replacement because decay has started underneath or the tooth has cracked.
If you are in Nanticoke and wondering whether your old fillings should be replaced, the dentist at our Port Dover office can examine them, explain whether replacement is advisable and discuss options for restoring the tooth with a natural-looking material.

Assessing fillings
Cracks in the filling or tooth, gaps at the edges, decay underneath, rough or broken surfaces and sensitivity can indicate that a filling is failing. X-rays may show decay that is not visible from above. Food catching around a filling or a change in how it feels when you bite can also suggest that it needs attention.
An old filling that is intact, sealing well and not causing problems may not need replacement, even if it is metal. Removing a filling always removes some tooth structure, so unnecessary replacement can weaken a tooth. The dentist will explain the condition of each filling and whether replacement is recommended or optional.
Cosmetic reasons
Dark metal fillings or stained tooth-coloured fillings in visible areas can make a smile look less bright. Replacing them with a tooth-coloured composite or ceramic restoration may improve appearance. If you plan to whiten your teeth, it is usually done first so the new restorations can be matched to the lighter shade.
When replacement is mainly for appearance, discuss the trade-offs. Removing a sound filling takes away some tooth structure and carries a small risk of sensitivity or nerve irritation. The dentist can help you decide whether the cosmetic benefit outweighs those considerations, and which teeth make the most noticeable difference.
The procedure
The tooth is numbed, and the old filling is carefully removed. Any decay underneath is cleaned away. If the tooth is cracked or a large amount of structure is missing, the dentist may recommend an onlay or crown instead of a new direct filling. You will be told if the plan changes once the old filling is removed.
A tooth-coloured composite is often placed in layers and hardened with a light, then shaped and polished. For larger cavities, an indirect restoration such as a ceramic onlay may be made over two visits. The bite is checked and adjusted. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles over time.
Afterward
Mild sensitivity to temperature or pressure can occur after replacement, especially for deeper fillings. Avoid chewing on the numb side until feeling returns. If the bite feels high or sensitivity worsens rather than settles, contact the office so the dentist can check and adjust the restoration.
Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and limit frequent sugary snacks to protect the edges of new fillings. Tooth-coloured fillings can stain with coffee, tea and tobacco, so rinse after these. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor fillings and catch problems early, before more extensive treatment is needed.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to have your old fillings assessed. Mention any sensitivity, rough edges or cosmetic concerns so the team can plan an appropriate examination.

Not necessarily. Intact metal fillings that are sealing well may not need replacement. The dentist will assess each filling and explain whether replacement is recommended for health reasons or is a cosmetic choice.
Lifespan varies with the material, size, location and your habits. Some fillings last many years, while others wear or break sooner. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor them and recommend replacement when needed.
Some short-term sensitivity is common, especially for larger fillings. It usually settles over time. If sensitivity worsens or persists, contact the office so the dentist can check the tooth and bite.
Surface staining can sometimes be polished. Deeper discolouration or staining at the edges may require replacement. The dentist can assess whether polishing or replacement would be more appropriate.
Decay under a filling needs to be removed and the tooth restored. Depending on how much tooth remains, a new filling, onlay or crown may be recommended. The dentist will explain the options after examining the tooth.
From fillings to crowns, tooth-coloured materials can restore teeth discreetly. Nanticoke patients can compare options with our Port Dover dentist.
Composite fillings repair decay with a tooth-coloured material bonded to the tooth. See how Nanticoke patients are assessed and treated in Port Dover.
