Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Lynedoch patientsRefresh what has worn
Fillings do not last forever. Older silver fillings can darken the surrounding tooth, and tooth-coloured fillings may stain, chip or develop rough edges over time. Some fillings start to leak at the edges, letting decay form underneath. Others remain sound for many years. Deciding whether to replace a filling depends on its condition, the health of the tooth and your goals.
Lynedoch patients concerned about the look or condition of existing fillings can have them evaluated at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain which fillings are working well, which show signs of failure and what replacement would involve for each tooth.

Assessing fillings
Cracks, chips, gaps at the edges, new decay underneath and sensitivity are common reasons to replace a filling. X-rays help reveal decay that cannot be seen. Fillings that catch floss, trap food or feel rough to the tongue may also be candidates for replacement.
A filling that is intact, sealed and free of decay may not need to be replaced, even if it is old or dark. Removing a sound filling always removes some healthy tooth. The dentist will explain the condition of each filling so you can weigh appearance against preserving tooth structure.
Replacement options
Smaller fillings are often replaced with tooth-coloured composite that bonds to the tooth and blends with its natural shade. Composite can be a good choice when the remaining tooth is strong. The dentist will explain how durable it is likely to be in that location.
Large old fillings may have weakened the tooth. In those cases, an inlay, onlay or crown may provide more support than a new filling. Ask the dentist why a particular restoration is recommended and how it compares with a straightforward composite replacement.
The procedure
After freezing, the dentist removes the old filling and any decay found beneath it. Occasionally the damage is more extensive than expected, and the plan may need to change. The dentist will explain if this happens and discuss the options before continuing.
For composite, the material is applied in layers, hardened with a light and shaped to fit your bite. For larger restorations, impressions are taken and a temporary placed. Once the final restoration is in, the bite is checked and adjusted for comfort.
Looking after them
Some sensitivity is common after replacement, particularly if decay was deep. It usually eases gradually. Contact the office if pain increases, your bite feels uneven or sensitivity lingers longer than expected. Avoid chewing on the treated side until freezing wears off.
Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and limit frequent sugary snacks to reduce the risk of decay at the edges. Composite can stain over time, so regular hygiene visits help keep it looking fresh. Checkups allow the dentist to monitor all restorations for wear.
Planning your appointment
Mention the fillings you are concerned about when booking at our Port Dover office. The dentist can evaluate them at your next exam and discuss which, if any, should be replaced.
Ask whether multiple replacements can be grouped into fewer appointments to reduce the number of trips.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Not necessarily. Sound fillings without decay may not need replacement. The dentist will assess each one and explain the benefits and risks of replacing versus keeping them.
Tooth-coloured composite is shaded to blend with your natural teeth. If you plan to whiten, discuss it first so the new filling can match your final shade.
Silver fillings can darken the tooth around them, and composite can absorb stains from food, drinks and tobacco over time. Polishing may help composite, while replacement may be needed in some cases.
Freezing is used to keep the tooth comfortable. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually temporary. Contact the office if discomfort persists.
Yes. If the seal at the edge breaks down, bacteria can enter and cause decay. Regular checkups and X-rays help identify this early.
Composite, ceramic and porcelain restorations can repair teeth discreetly. Lynedoch patients can compare tooth-coloured options with our Port Dover dentist.
Tooth-coloured composite fillings can repair decay and small fractures. Lynedoch patients can learn about the procedure, sensitivity and aftercare at our Port Dover office.
