Fillings wear over time. Silver amalgam can darken the tooth around it, composite can stain at the edges and any filling can chip, crack or develop new decay underneath. Some people want older fillings replaced for appearance, while others have a clinical reason such as a leak or fracture. Each filling deserves its own assessment rather than a blanket decision.
Long Point patients with fillings that look dark, feel rough or have been flagged at a checkup can have them evaluated at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain which ones need attention and why.

Assessing fillings
Clinical reasons include decay at the edges or beneath a filling, cracks in the filling or tooth, gaps where food collects, a filling that has worn down significantly or symptoms like sensitivity and pain when biting. X-rays help reveal hidden decay. In these cases, replacement protects the tooth and helps prevent a larger problem from developing.
Some people dislike the look of dark or stained fillings, especially those visible when smiling or laughing. Cosmetic replacement is a valid choice, but replacing a sound filling removes some tooth structure each time. The dentist will discuss benefits and trade-offs so you can decide whether the change is worth it for each tooth.
Replacement options
Tooth-coloured composite can replace many small and medium fillings, blending with natural enamel and bonding to the tooth. It is often completed in one visit. Composite can stain over time and may wear faster under heavy forces, so the dentist will consider your bite and habits when recommending it.
Large old fillings sometimes leave weak tooth walls. Replacing them with an inlay, onlay or crown may provide better protection against cracking. These typically require two visits and laboratory fabrication. The dentist will explain why a particular level of coverage is suggested for each tooth.
The appointment
The tooth is numbed, and the old filling is removed carefully along with any decay underneath. The dentist examines the tooth for cracks once the filling is out, since these are sometimes only visible at this stage. If unexpected damage is found, the plan may change, and the dentist will explain why.
The new filling is placed in layers and hardened, or a temporary is placed while a laboratory restoration is made. The bite is checked and adjusted. Mild sensitivity can follow replacement and usually settles. If several fillings need replacement, they may be scheduled over multiple visits.
Afterward
Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and limit frequent sugary snacks. Rinse with water after coffee, tea or red wine to reduce staining on composite. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can help protect restorations from wear and chipping over the years.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor margins and catch new decay early. If you have several older fillings, ask the dentist to help prioritize which ones to watch and which to replace first. Planning replacements over time can be more manageable than doing everything at once.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an exam and mention which fillings concern you. The team can allow time for the dentist to assess each one and discuss priorities.
Bring any recent X-rays from another dentist and note any fillings that feel sensitive or catch food.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Not necessarily. Intact amalgam fillings without decay or cracks can often be left in place. The dentist will assess each filling and recommend replacement only when there is a clinical or cosmetic reason you agree with.
Each replacement removes a small amount of tooth structure. For large fillings, an onlay or crown may provide better long-term protection. The dentist will explain the trade-offs.
Sometimes surface staining can be polished away. Deeper staining or leaks at the edges may require replacement. The dentist can check whether polishing would be enough for your filling.
It depends on comfort, location and time. Some people prefer to address several in one visit, while others spread them out. The dentist will help you plan a sensible schedule.
Coverage varies by plan and the reason for replacement. Check with your insurer about your policy. The office can provide treatment details to help you ask the right questions.
