Fillings wear, chip, stain and leak over time. Older silver amalgam fillings can darken the surrounding tooth, and tooth-coloured fillings can pick up stains at their edges. Sometimes decay forms underneath an old filling without obvious symptoms. In other cases, a filling is still sound but you would simply prefer a more natural appearance.
Langton patients wondering about their fillings can have them assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check each filling for breakdown, decay and cracks and explain whether replacement is recommended for health reasons, cosmetic reasons or not at all, along with the trade-offs involved in each case.

When to replace
Fillings with cracks, chipped edges, open margins where bacteria can enter or decay forming underneath usually need to be replaced. Fillings that have worn down can affect your bite. Teeth with large old fillings may also develop cracks in the surrounding tooth structure, and the dentist may suggest a stronger restoration to protect them from breaking.
Some people want to replace visible silver fillings or stained tooth-coloured fillings to improve their smile. This is a valid choice, but removing a sound filling always removes a little more tooth structure. The dentist will discuss whether cosmetic replacement is worthwhile and which teeth are most visible when you smile and talk with others.
Material choices
Tooth-coloured composite resin is often used to replace small to medium fillings. It bonds to the tooth, can be shade-matched and often requires minimal additional tooth removal. Composite can stain over time and may wear faster than some other materials, especially on back teeth that take heavy chewing forces or in people who grind at night.
If the old filling was large or the tooth has cracks, a laboratory-made inlay, onlay or crown may be recommended. These restorations offer more strength and protection for weakened teeth. The dentist will explain why a larger restoration might be better in the long run and what the process involves, including the number of appointments.
The procedure
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic. The old filling is carefully removed along with any decay underneath. The dentist then inspects the tooth for cracks or deeper problems that may not have been visible on X-rays. If the cavity is larger than expected, they will discuss whether a different restoration is now more appropriate.
For composite fillings, the tooth is prepared and the resin is applied in layers, shaped and hardened with a light. The filling is polished and the bite is checked. If a laboratory restoration is needed, impressions are taken and a temporary is placed until the final piece is ready at a second appointment several weeks later.
Aftercare
Some sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common for a short time after replacement, particularly if the old filling was deep. It usually improves within days or weeks. If your bite feels uneven, call the office for a quick adjustment. Persistent or worsening pain should be checked, as the nerve may be irritated and need attention.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss every day to prevent decay around the edges of new fillings. Limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor your restorations and catch small problems before they require larger repairs or more involved treatment in the future.
Planning your appointment
Book an exam at our Port Dover office and mention any fillings that bother you. The dentist will assess them and explain whether replacement is recommended and which options would suit each tooth.
If you are planning teeth whitening, mention it first so new tooth-coloured fillings can be matched to the brighter shade.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Not necessarily. Sound amalgam fillings that are not causing problems may not need replacement. Removing them takes away some tooth structure. The dentist can assess each filling and help you decide based on health, appearance and your preferences.
Older amalgam fillings can darken over time and may also cause the surrounding tooth to look grey. Tooth-coloured fillings can stain at the edges. Discolouration does not always mean decay, but the dentist will check to be sure.
Composite fillings are shade-matched to your teeth. If you plan to whiten, it is best to do so beforehand, as fillings do not change colour with whitening. The dentist will choose a shade that blends naturally.
Local anaesthetic keeps the tooth comfortable during the procedure. You may feel pressure and vibration. Some sensitivity afterwards is common and usually settles. Tell the dentist if you feel any discomfort during treatment so more anaesthetic can be given.
Signs include sensitivity, pain when biting, rough edges, food catching, visible cracks or dark areas around the filling. Some failing fillings have no symptoms. Regular checkups and X-rays help the dentist identify problems early, before pain starts.
Composite fillings, ceramic inlays and all-ceramic crowns can repair teeth while blending in. Langton patients can compare these options and their upkeep.
Composite fillings repair cavities with material shaded to match your teeth. Langton patients can learn when they suit and what the visit involves.
