Fillings do not last forever. Over years of chewing, temperature changes and wear, they can crack, discolour, pull away from the tooth or allow new decay to form around the edges. Some people also want to replace dark or stained fillings simply because of how they look. Deciding whether replacement is necessary, advisable or optional starts with a careful examination.
Hagersville patients can have their existing fillings evaluated at our Port Dover office. The dentist explains which restorations are sound, which need attention and which could be replaced for appearance, so you can make an informed choice.

Should it be replaced?
Cracks in the filling or surrounding tooth, gaps at the edges, new decay underneath, rough or broken surfaces, and sensitivity when biting can indicate a filling is failing. X-rays help spot decay beneath restorations that cannot be seen directly. When a filling is compromised, replacing it can protect the tooth from further damage.
Some fillings are stained or darker than you would like but are otherwise sound. Replacing them is a cosmetic choice. Because each replacement removes a little more tooth structure, the dentist may suggest leaving sound fillings in place or polishing stained ones. You can weigh appearance against the benefits of keeping a sound restoration.
Material options
For small to moderate fillings, tooth-coloured composite resin is commonly used. It is bonded to the tooth and shaded to match, often making the repair hard to see. Composite works well for many front and back teeth, though very large restorations or heavy grinding may call for a stronger option.
If the old filling is large or the tooth has cracks, an inlay, onlay or crown may provide better protection. These are made outside the mouth from ceramic, composite or gold. The dentist will explain which option offers the right balance of strength, appearance and preserving natural tooth structure.
The appointment
The tooth is numbed, and the old filling is removed. Any decay found underneath is cleaned away. If the old filling is amalgam, the dentist uses standard precautions such as water spray and suction during removal. The tooth is then prepared for the new restoration, with as much healthy structure preserved as possible.
For composite, layers are bonded and hardened with a curing light, then shaped and polished. For lab-made restorations, a temporary is placed and a second visit is scheduled. Your bite is checked carefully. Mention anything that feels high or rough before you head back to Hagersville so it can be adjusted.
After replacement
Some sensitivity to cold or pressure for a few days is common, particularly with deeper fillings. It usually fades. If it persists, worsens or you feel pain when biting, contact the office. The bite may need a small adjustment, or the tooth may need further evaluation to make sure the nerve is healthy.
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth daily to prevent new decay around the edges. Composite can stain over time with coffee, tea or wine, so regular cleanings help. If you grind, a night guard may protect your restorations. Regular checkups let the dentist monitor their condition.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an exam focused on your existing fillings. Mention any sensitivity, rough areas or cosmetic concerns so the dentist can evaluate each restoration with your goals in mind.
Bring previous X-rays or records if available. If you plan to whiten, mention it, as new fillings are best matched to your final tooth shade.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Not necessarily. Sound amalgam fillings can last many years, and removing them takes away some tooth structure. The dentist will evaluate each filling and recommend replacement only when there is decay, damage or a cosmetic preference.
Dentists use standard precautions such as suction and water spray when removing amalgam. Health Canada does not recommend removing sound amalgam fillings purely for health reasons. Discuss any concerns with the dentist before deciding.
Tooth-coloured materials are shaded to blend with surrounding teeth. If you plan to whiten, do it first, since composite and ceramic do not change colour with bleaching and will be matched to your current shade.
Longevity varies with the material, size, bite forces and home care. Regular checkups help catch wear or decay early, when a repair may be simpler than a full replacement. Avoiding hard foods helps too.
Sometimes surface staining on composite can be polished to improve its appearance. If the staining is deeper or at the edges, replacement may be needed. The dentist will suggest the most conservative approach.
Composite fillings, ceramic onlays and crowns can repair teeth while blending in. Hagersville patients can compare options for strength, look and upkeep.
