Port Dover Family Dentistry
Fillings have no fixed expiry date. In this Courtland replacement guide, current condition, symptoms and earlier repairs help frame the decision about older work.

Courtland residents can have existing fillings assessed at our Port Dover office

You may notice a dark margin, a colour mismatch or a filling that has been present for many years. Those observations are worth discussing, but they do not automatically mean the restoration has failed. Assessment can separate appearance preferences from a defect or problem in the surrounding tooth.
Our Port Dover practice can review existing fillings with Courtland patients. Describe what has changed and whether the tooth feels different. Ask which options are appropriate, including leaving sound work in place when replacement would offer no clear clinical benefit.

Describe the change you have noticed
Describe roughness, food catching, sensitivity or missing material alongside a line or stain you have noticed. Include whether the appearance is new or has been present for years. The dentist can assess the edges and surrounding tooth with that history, rather than treat a colour difference as proof of failure.
Mention prior repairs and any history of repeated problems in the same area. If the tooth hurts when biting or without a trigger, describe that clearly. Replacing a filling may not address every source of discomfort, so the cause needs consideration before treatment is chosen.
Compare monitoring, repair and replacement
A localized defect may allow a limited repair where the material and tooth condition make that reasonable. Other findings can justify replacing the restoration. The explanation should identify why the proposed extent of treatment fits the actual problem, including which smaller approaches remain suitable and which would leave the concern unresolved.
Removing existing material can involve additional tooth preparation, so an appearance-driven decision has implications. Discuss what would change and whether the current filling is serviceable. An older restoration should not be treated as automatically defective simply because a newer material is available.
Plan the new restoration if needed
The amount of remaining tooth and the load it carries affect the material and coverage choices. Replacing a large restoration can present different decisions from changing a small filling. Clarify which options are currently suitable and which further findings during treatment might require the plan to be reconsidered.
If shade is a priority, mention planned whitening before the sequence is agreed. New material needs to be considered alongside neighbouring teeth and existing work. Courtland patients should understand the proposed appointments and estimate rather than assume every replacement is a simple like-for-like change.
Review function after the change
Use the aftercare instructions and report an unusually high bite, food trapping or discomfort that persists. The dentist can examine the restored area to decide whether adjustment or further investigation is needed. Repeatedly chewing hard on a sore tooth to test the new material does not explain the cause of the problem.
Keep routine reviews and cleaning around the restoration. If repeated decay or breakage led to replacement, ask how those contributors will be managed. Changing the material alone does not remove the need to address the conditions affecting the tooth over time.
Planning your appointment
Tell our Port Dover team what you have noticed and whether symptoms are present. If you know when the filling was placed or repaired, share that history, while recognizing that its current condition needs examination.
Ask which findings justify treatment and what options preserve appropriate tooth structure. Discuss appearance goals, proposed materials and possible changes to the plan before agreeing to remove an existing restoration.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Age alone does not determine its condition. The dentist considers the restoration, surrounding tooth and symptoms. Ask what the examination shows and whether monitoring, repair or replacement is appropriate, rather than assume a fixed expiry date applies to every filling.
A visible line needs interpretation in the context of the examination. Colour alone does not establish the cause or treatment. Tell the dentist about any change or symptoms and ask which findings support the recommendation for that particular area.
A limited repair may be suitable for selected localized defects, depending on the material and tooth condition. Ask whether that option is reasonable in your case. The dentist can explain why a smaller repair or complete replacement is preferred.
Discuss the appearance preference and the implications of removal with the dentist. A serviceable restoration does not automatically need replacement because of its material. The decision should consider tooth preparation, expected benefit and suitable alternatives, including continued monitoring.
Contact the practice and describe the pattern and duration of discomfort. The dentist may need to assess the bite, restoration and tooth itself. Do not assume that continued symptoms are only cosmetic or must be tolerated indefinitely after a material change.
Compare tooth-coloured repair options from Courtland by the job each must do: fill a defect, cover weakened structure or replace older work under chewing demands.
Teeth meeting unevenly after a composite filling deserve a call, not repeated bite testing. Our Courtland guide covers repair, bite checks and follow-up concerns.
