Refresh what has worn out

Old fillings do not always need replacing, but some do.

Fillings do not last forever. Over time they can wear down, crack, leak at the edges or become discoloured. Some people also want to replace older metal fillings with tooth-coloured materials for appearance. However, replacing a sound filling removes some healthy tooth structure, so the decision should be based on a careful assessment rather than appearance alone.

Bloomsburg patients with concerns about old or stained fillings can have them assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check the condition of each restoration and explain whether replacement is recommended, optional or unnecessary, along with what options are available for each tooth.

When to replace

Replacement is usually based on the filling’s condition.

Signs a filling is failing

A filling may need replacement if it is cracked, chipped, worn down, leaking at the edges or has new decay around it. Symptoms such as sensitivity, food catching or a rough edge can be clues. Often there are no symptoms, which is why regular checkups and X-rays help the dentist spot problems early before they affect the tooth.

Cosmetic reasons

Some people want to replace old metal or stained fillings on visible teeth for a more natural look. This can be reasonable, but replacing a filling in good condition removes some healthy tooth and may weaken it. The dentist will explain the trade-offs and help you decide whether cosmetic replacement is worthwhile for each tooth.

Options

The replacement depends on how much tooth remains.

Tooth-coloured fillings

If the tooth is still strong, a tooth-coloured composite filling may replace the old one. Composite bonds to the tooth and can be shaded to blend in. It suits small to medium restorations. The dentist will explain how long it is likely to last and how to care for it, including avoiding habits that stain it.

Inlays, onlays or crowns

If the old filling was large or the tooth is cracked, an inlay, onlay or crown may provide more strength. These restorations are made outside the mouth and bonded in place. The dentist will explain why a particular option is recommended based on the size of the restoration and the forces the tooth handles each day.

The procedure

Replacement is typically done in one or two visits.

  1. Removing the old filling

The area is numbed and the old filling is carefully removed. The dentist checks for decay or cracks underneath, which sometimes changes the treatment plan. Any decay is removed and the tooth is prepared for the new restoration. Let the dentist know if you feel discomfort at any point, so they can pause and adjust.

  2. Placing the new restoration

A composite filling is applied in layers and hardened with a light, then shaped and polished. For inlays, onlays or crowns, impressions are taken and a temporary is placed until the final restoration is ready. The dentist checks your bite carefully before you leave to ensure everything feels comfortable and even when you close. Speak up if it does not.

After replacement

A little care helps the new restoration last.

  • Settling in

Some sensitivity to temperature or pressure is common after a filling is replaced and usually settles within days or weeks. Avoid chewing on the treated side until numbness wears off. Contact the office if pain worsens, the bite feels uneven or sensitivity persists longer than expected, so the tooth can be rechecked promptly. Small adjustments often solve it.

  • Keeping it looking good

Brush and clean between your teeth, paying attention to the edges of the restoration. Composite can stain over time, so limit coffee, tea and red wine if appearance is a priority. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the restoration and polish or repair it as needed to keep it looking natural for longer. Mention any rough edges you notice.

Planning your appointment

Having your fillings reviewed.

Contact our Port Dover office from Bloomsburg to ask about old or stained fillings. Mention any sensitivity, rough edges or appearance concerns so the dentist can examine the specific teeth during your appointment.

If you are planning whitening, mention it, since it may affect the timing and shade selection of any replacement fillings.

Filling replacement questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Should I replace all my old metal fillings?

Not necessarily. Fillings in good condition may not need replacement. The dentist will assess each filling and explain whether replacement is recommended because of damage or decay, or whether it would mainly be for appearance.

Is it safe to remove old metal fillings?

Removing and replacing fillings is a routine procedure. The dentist will explain the process and any precautions used. If you have concerns about specific materials, raise them during your consultation so they can be addressed.

Will a tooth-coloured filling match my teeth?

Composite is shaded to blend with your natural teeth. If you plan to whiten, do it first so the new fillings can match your lighter shade. The dentist will help select the closest colour for each restoration.

Can a replaced filling fail too?

Any filling can wear or develop problems over time. Good home care, avoiding hard or sticky foods and regular checkups help it last longer. The dentist will monitor it and address any concerns early on.

Why might I need a crown instead of a new filling?

If the old filling was large or the tooth is cracked, there may not be enough tooth structure left to support another filling. A crown or onlay can provide more strength. The dentist will explain the reasoning.
