Children often worry most about the unknown. When a filling, sealant or other treatment is needed, a simple and honest explanation can reduce fear and help them cooperate. Pediatric treatment education uses age-appropriate words, demonstrations and repetition to prepare children for what they will see, hear and feel.
Families in Glen Meyer can work with our Port Dover team to prepare their child before a treatment visit. Parents are encouraged to share how their child learns best, any past experiences and the words that tend to calm or upset them, so explanations at home and in the chair match.

Before treatment
Keep your explanation simple and calm, focusing on what will happen rather than on what might hurt. For example, you might say the dentist will clean a small sugar bug out of the tooth and fill it so it stays strong. Avoid words such as needle, drill or pain, which can create fear your child did not already have.
Younger children often prefer short explanations close to the day, while older children may want more detail and time to ask questions. Some kids respond well to picture books or videos about dental visits. Let the dental team know how much your child likes to know, so their explanations in the chair fit with yours at home.
Tell, show, do
Before using an instrument, the team may describe it in child-friendly language, such as calling the suction a straw that sips water. They may then show it to your child, letting them feel the air or water on a finger. This step-by-step approach helps children know what to expect and often reduces fear of surprises.
Children may be given a simple way to signal if they need a break, such as raising a hand. Knowing they have some control can make them feel safer. The team will pace the treatment according to how your child is managing, and may pause or stop if your child becomes very distressed, to protect trust.
Your role
Children often take cues from their parents. Try to stay calm and speak in a gentle, encouraging voice. Avoid sharing your own fears or negative dental stories in front of your child. Praise specific behaviours, such as sitting still or opening wide, to reinforce cooperation without relying on bribes or promises. Small, sincere praise often means more to a child than a big reward.
During treatment, the team may ask you to stay quiet or simply hold your child’s hand, so your child can focus on one voice. Ask before the appointment how you can best help. If your child does better with you nearby or slightly out of view, let the team know so they can plan the room accordingly.
After treatment
After a filling or other treatment, explain in simple terms what your child should do, such as not chewing on their cheek while it feels numb and choosing soft foods. Watch younger children closely until the numbness wears off. Contact the office if your child has increasing pain, swelling or fever in the days after treatment.
Use the experience as an opportunity to talk about brushing, healthy snacks and regular checkups. Praise your child for being brave and remind them that keeping teeth clean helps avoid future fillings. Positive conversations at home can help make the next dental visit feel more familiar and less worrying. Some children enjoy explaining what happened to a sibling or grandparent, which reinforces what they learned.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office before your child’s treatment visit and share how they learn best, any fears and past experiences. The team can suggest ways to prepare at home.
Bring a comfort item if it helps, and plan the visit for a time of day when your child is usually rested and settled.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Give a short, honest explanation suited to their age, focusing on what will happen rather than on discomfort. Older children may want more detail. The dental team can help you choose words that fit your child’s personality.
Avoid promising that nothing will be felt. You might say the dentist will make the tooth sleepy and that it may feel like pressure or tickling. Let the team know about your child’s question so they can address it too.
Often, yes, especially with younger children. Ask the team about their approach. Sometimes children cooperate better when one person speaks to them, so you may be asked to stay quiet and offer gentle support from nearby.
The team may pause, offer reassurance or try a different approach. If your child is too distressed, it may be better to stop and reschedule. Other options, such as nitrous oxide or referral, may be discussed if needed.
Talk positively about the visit, praise your child for their efforts and keep regular checkups so the office becomes familiar. Share any feedback with the team about what helped or did not help your child.
