Oral cancer can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, floor of the mouth, palate and throat. Early changes may look like a small sore, a white or red patch or a lump that does not seem serious. A screening is a careful visual and physical examination designed to spot unusual tissue so it can be investigated further if needed.
Patients from Vittoria can have an oral cancer screening as part of a regular exam at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain what they are checking and, if anything looks unusual, discuss the next steps, which may include monitoring, a follow-up visit or a referral for further assessment by a specialist.

Why screen
Many oral cancers are easier to treat when found early. Because early changes are often painless, people may not notice them. Regular screening by a dentist gives a trained eye a chance to look at areas that are hard to see at home. Most findings turn out to be harmless, but those that are not benefit from early attention.
Tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, sun exposure to the lips, certain types of human papillomavirus and a history of previous oral cancer increase risk. However, oral cancer can occur in people without these factors. Sharing your history helps the dentist assess your risk and decide whether more frequent screening is appropriate. Honest answers about habits help.
The examination
The dentist examines your lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, floor of the mouth and palate, using a light and mirror. You may be asked to stick out your tongue and move it side to side so the edges can be seen. Dentures or other removable appliances are taken out so the tissues underneath can be checked.
The dentist gently feels your neck, jaw and the area under your chin for lumps or swollen lymph nodes. The inside of your cheeks and floor of the mouth may also be felt. This physical part of the screening can reveal changes that are not visible. The whole process usually takes only a few minutes.
If something is found
Many changes, such as ulcers from biting the cheek or irritation from a rough tooth, heal within a couple of weeks. The dentist may ask you to return to check whether an area has resolved. Photographs may be taken to compare. If the cause seems clear, such as a sharp edge, it may be smoothed to help healing.
If an area does not heal or looks concerning, the dentist may recommend a biopsy or refer you to a specialist for evaluation. A referral does not mean you have cancer; it means a closer look is needed. The dentist will explain why further assessment is suggested and what the process involves. Ask who will contact you with results.
Self-checks
Look for sores that do not heal within two weeks, white or red patches, lumps, thickened areas, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, numbness or a feeling that something is caught in your throat. Ear pain on one side without an ear infection can also be a sign. Contact the office if you notice any of these.
Avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol and protecting your lips from the sun with a lip balm that contains sunscreen can lower risk. Regular dental visits allow screening to happen routinely. If you are concerned about HPV, discuss vaccination and other questions with your physician. Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables supports overall health as well. Make a habit of glancing at your mouth in good light once a month.
Planning your appointment
Ask our Port Dover office whether an oral cancer screening is included in your next exam. If you have noticed a sore or change that has not healed, mention it when booking so it can be checked.
Note when you first noticed any change and whether it has grown or shifted, and bring a list of medications and relevant health history.

Screening is often included in regular dental exams. People with higher risk factors may benefit from more frequent checks. The dentist will recommend an approach based on your history and what is found during examinations.
No. It involves a visual examination and gentle feeling of the tissues in and around your mouth and neck. It is quick and generally comfortable, with no needles or special preparation required. Denture wearers will be asked to remove them.
Most unusual findings are not cancer. The dentist may ask you to return in a couple of weeks to see if it heals, or recommend further assessment if it looks concerning. You will be told the reasons and next steps.
Yes. While tobacco increases risk, oral cancer can occur in people who have never smoked. HPV, sun exposure and other factors play a role. Regular screening is useful regardless of whether you smoke. Report lasting changes.
Looking for sores, patches or lumps between visits can help you spot changes early. Contact the office if something does not heal within two weeks. Self-checks complement, but do not replace, professional screening. A small mirror and flashlight help.
