An oral cancer screening is a visual and physical examination of the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, palate, floor of the mouth and throat, along with the neck and jaw. The dentist looks and feels for patches, lumps, sores or other changes. Most findings turn out to be harmless, but some need monitoring or further investigation to rule out anything serious.
For patients in Vanessa, screening is usually part of routine exams at our Port Dover office. If you have noticed a change in your mouth, such as a sore that will not heal or a lump, do not wait for your next checkup. Call to arrange an assessment, and mention the change when you book.

Why it matters
Oral cancers and pre-cancerous changes can be painless in the early stages, which means they may go unnoticed. Regular screening gives the dentist a chance to spot unusual tissue while it is small. A screening cannot diagnose cancer on its own, but it can identify areas that should be examined more closely or tested by a specialist.
Tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, certain types of HPV infection, long-term sun exposure to the lips, a weakened immune system and a history of previous oral cancer can all increase risk. People who work outdoors for long hours may want to protect their lips from the sun. Anyone can develop oral cancer, though, so screening is useful for most adults.
The screening
The dentist examines your lips, the inside of your cheeks, gums, tongue, the floor of your mouth, palate and the back of your throat using a light and a mirror. You may be asked to stick out your tongue and move it side to side. Gauze may be used to gently hold the tongue so all its surfaces can be seen clearly.
The dentist gently feels your neck, under your jaw and the floor of your mouth for lumps, swelling or areas that feel unusual. If you wear dentures, you will be asked to remove them so the tissue underneath can be checked. The whole screening usually takes only a few minutes during a regular exam, and you can ask questions as it happens.
Signs to watch
Call the office if you notice a sore, ulcer or patch that does not heal within about two weeks, a red or white area in the mouth, a lump or thickening, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, numbness, a feeling that something is caught in your throat or unexplained bleeding. These signs are often caused by something harmless, but they should be checked.
Between visits, you can look at your mouth in a mirror with good light once a month or so. Check your lips, gums, cheeks, tongue and the floor of the mouth. Feel your neck for lumps. If something new appears or persists, note when you first saw it and contact the office rather than waiting for your checkup.
Follow-up
If the dentist sees something that is probably harmless, such as irritation from a sharp tooth or denture, they may remove the cause and ask you to return in a couple of weeks to see whether it has healed. Photographs may be taken to compare changes. Keep the follow-up appointment, even if the area seems better.
If a change is suspicious or does not heal, the dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon or other specialist for further examination and possibly a biopsy, which is the only way to diagnose cancer. The dentist will explain why a referral is recommended and help coordinate the next steps with you and your physician.
Planning your appointment
Oral cancer screening is usually part of your routine exam at our Port Dover office. If you have noticed a specific change in your mouth, call to book an assessment rather than waiting for your next checkup.
Mention any tobacco or alcohol use honestly, and note when you first noticed any sore, lump or patch that concerns you.

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. The screening involves looking at and gently feeling the tissues of your mouth, neck and jaw. It is usually quick and comfortable and is often done as part of a regular dental exam without any extra appointment.
Screening is commonly done during routine checkups. People with higher risk factors may benefit from more frequent checks. The dentist will recommend a schedule based on your history and risks. Between visits, call promptly about any change that does not heal.
Most findings are harmless. The dentist may ask you to return in a couple of weeks to see if it heals, or refer you for further examination. A biopsy is the only way to diagnose cancer, and a referral does not mean you have cancer.
Yes. While tobacco increases risk, oral cancer can also affect non-smokers, including people with HPV-related changes or long-term sun exposure to the lips. Screening is useful for most adults, whatever their habits, age or history.
Yes. Monthly self-checks in good light can help you notice changes. Look at your lips, gums, cheeks, tongue and floor of the mouth, and feel your neck. Report anything new or persistent to the dental office.
