Every dental service for Silver HillA careful look beyond the teeth
Oral cancer can develop on the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, floor of the mouth, palate or throat. Early changes are often painless and easy to overlook, which is why a careful visual and physical check is a routine part of many dental exams. Most findings turn out to be harmless, but anything unusual can be monitored or referred for further assessment.
Patients from Silver Hill can have an oral cancer screening during their regular checkup at our Port Dover office, or raise a specific concern at any time. The dentist will explain what they are looking for, what they find and whether any follow-up or referral would be sensible.

Risk factors
Tobacco in any form, heavy alcohol use and the combination of the two significantly raise the risk of oral cancer. Certain types of human papillomavirus are linked to cancers of the throat. Long-term sun exposure increases the risk of lip cancer, which is worth keeping in mind for anyone who spends long hours working or playing outdoors.
People without obvious risk factors can still develop oral cancer, so screening is useful for adults generally. Being honest with the dentist about tobacco, alcohol and sun exposure helps them understand your risk and decide how closely to watch any area that looks unusual. The information is used only to guide your care.
Signs to report
A sore or ulcer that does not heal, a white or red patch, a lump or thickening of the cheek or tongue, unexplained bleeding, or numbness in part of the mouth are worth reporting. Denture sores that persist after an adjustment should also be checked. Many such changes are harmless, but they deserve a professional look.
Ongoing hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, a feeling that something is caught in the throat, ear pain on one side or a lump in the neck can also be warning signs. If you notice any of these between appointments, contact your dentist or physician rather than waiting for your next scheduled checkup.
The screening
The dentist looks carefully at your lips, the inside of your cheeks, gums, the top, sides and underside of your tongue, the floor of your mouth and the back of your throat. You may be asked to stick out your tongue or say ah. Any dentures or removable appliances are taken out so all surfaces can be seen clearly.
Using gloved fingers, the dentist gently feels the tissues of the mouth and the neck and jaw area for lumps or tenderness. The whole process takes only a few minutes. If an area looks unusual, the dentist will describe it, may take a photograph and will explain the next step before you leave the chair.
If something is found
Some changes, such as irritation from a sharp tooth or a denture, may be watched for a short period after the cause is removed. The dentist may ask you to return in a couple of weeks to see whether the area has healed. Keeping that appointment is important, because a change that persists needs further investigation.
If an area looks suspicious or does not heal, the dentist may refer you to a specialist, such as an oral surgeon, for further evaluation, which might include a biopsy. A referral does not mean cancer has been found. It is a precaution to get a definite answer, and the dentist will explain what to expect next.
Planning your appointment
If you have noticed a sore, patch or lump that has lasted more than two weeks, call our Port Dover office rather than waiting for your next checkup. Describe where it is and how long it has been there.
Bring a list of medications and note any tobacco or alcohol use. Remove dentures before the exam so all areas of the mouth can be checked.
Before you book

A soft tissue examination is commonly included in routine dental exams. If you are unsure, ask the dentist to tell you when they are checking the soft tissues and what they look for. You can also request a check at any time if you notice a change.
No. It involves looking at and gently feeling the tissues of the mouth, jaw and neck. It takes only a few minutes and is usually done during a regular exam. Let the dentist know if any area feels tender while they are checking it.
Most unusual findings are not cancer. The dentist may monitor the area, remove a possible cause of irritation or refer you for further assessment. They will explain what they saw and why a particular next step is recommended for you.
Yes. While tobacco greatly increases risk, oral cancer can occur in people without obvious risk factors, including those linked to certain viral infections. A routine screening is a simple way to catch changes early for anyone, regardless of habits.
Avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol, protecting your lips from the sun with a balm that has sun protection and keeping regular dental visits all help. Ask your physician about HPV vaccination where appropriate, and report any lasting changes in your mouth promptly.
