A careful look beyond the teeth

Screening helps catch unusual changes early, when they are easier to manage.

Oral cancer can develop on the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, floor of the mouth, palate or throat. Early changes are often painless and easy to miss. A screening is a visual and physical check of these areas, usually done during a routine dental exam, to look for patches, lumps, sores or other changes that may need closer attention.

Pine Grove patients visiting our Port Dover office typically have this screening as part of their regular checkups. If you have noticed something unusual in your mouth, you can also ask for a focused look at that area.

Risk factors

Anyone can develop oral cancer, but some factors raise risk.

Lifestyle factors

Tobacco use, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes and chewing tobacco, is a major risk factor. Heavy alcohol use increases risk further, especially combined with smoking. Sun exposure can affect the lips. Knowing your risk factors helps the dentist decide how closely to monitor certain areas, though screening is useful for everyone.

Other contributors

Infection with certain types of human papillomavirus is linked to some throat cancers. Age, a weakened immune system and a previous history of oral cancer also matter. Share your history openly with the dentist. There is no judgement involved; accurate information simply helps them provide appropriate care and advice.

The screening

The check is quick and painless.

  1. Visual examination

The dentist looks at your lips, gums, inner cheeks, tongue including its sides and underside, the floor of the mouth, palate and back of the throat. Good lighting and a small mirror help. You may be asked to stick out your tongue or move it side to side so every surface can be seen clearly.

  2. Physical check

The dentist gently feels the tissues inside the mouth and the lymph nodes in your neck and jaw for lumps or tenderness. The whole process usually takes only a few minutes. If you wear dentures, they will be removed so the tissues underneath can be checked properly.

Changes to report

Tell the dentist about changes that last more than two weeks.

  • Signs worth mentioning

Mention sores that do not heal, white or red patches, lumps or thickened areas, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, numbness in the mouth, a feeling that something is stuck in the throat or unexplained bleeding. Many of these have harmless causes, but changes lasting more than about two weeks deserve professional attention.

  • Why timing matters

Most findings turn out to be harmless, such as irritation from a sharp tooth or a minor infection. Still, checking early is important, because cancers found at an early stage are generally easier to treat. Do not wait for your next routine visit if you notice a persistent change.

If something is found

A finding does not mean cancer, but it may need follow-up.

Monitoring

If an area looks unusual but has a likely harmless cause, the dentist may remove an irritant and ask you to return in a couple of weeks to see whether it has healed. Photos may be taken to compare. This careful watching helps avoid unnecessary procedures while ensuring nothing is missed.

Referral and testing

If a change persists or looks concerning, the dentist may refer you to a specialist for further assessment, which can include a biopsy. Ask what the referral is for, how quickly you should be seen and what to expect. The dentist can coordinate information with the specialist and your family doctor.

Planning your appointment

Having a screening from Pine Grove

Screening is usually part of a routine exam at our Port Dover office. If you have noticed something specific, call to describe it so the team can arrange a timely look.

Note when you first noticed the change and whether it has grown. Bring your medication list and mention tobacco or alcohol use honestly.

Oral cancer screening questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How often should I have an oral cancer screening?

It is commonly done at routine dental exams. People with higher risk factors may be monitored more closely. The dentist will recommend an appropriate schedule based on your history and any findings.

Does the screening hurt?

No. It involves looking at and gently feeling the tissues of your mouth and neck. It takes only a few minutes and is usually part of your regular checkup.

I have a mouth sore. Should I be worried?

Most mouth sores heal within two weeks and have harmless causes. If a sore lasts longer, bleeds easily or grows, have it checked. Early assessment provides peace of mind or allows prompt follow-up.

Can non-smokers get oral cancer?

Yes. While tobacco greatly increases risk, oral cancer can occur in non-smokers, sometimes linked to HPV or other factors. Regular screening is worthwhile for everyone.

What happens if the dentist refers me?

A specialist will examine the area and may recommend a biopsy to identify what the change is. Most referrals do not result in a cancer diagnosis, but they provide certainty.
