Early awareness matters

A careful look at the mouth can catch changes worth investigating.

Oral cancer can develop on the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, floor of the mouth, palate or throat. Early changes may be painless and easy to overlook. A screening involves looking at and feeling these tissues for unusual patches, lumps or sores. It does not diagnose cancer, but it can help identify areas that need closer attention or further testing.

Bloomsburg patients can have the soft tissues of the mouth examined as part of visits at our Port Dover office. If you have noticed a change that worries you, let the team know when booking, and the dentist will examine the area and explain whether monitoring or referral would be appropriate.

Know the signs

Some changes deserve prompt attention.

  • Changes worth reporting

A sore that does not heal within about two weeks, a red or white patch, a lump or thickening, numbness, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or a feeling that something is caught in the throat should be checked. Many such changes turn out to be harmless, but it is better to have them examined rather than wait to see if they disappear.

  • Risk factors

Tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, sun exposure to the lips and certain viral infections can increase the risk of oral cancer. Age and family history may also play a role. Let the team know about any of these factors. They help the dentist decide how closely to monitor certain areas and whether further investigation is warranted.

The screening

Screening is quick and usually comfortable.

A visual and physical exam

The dentist looks at the lips, inside of the cheeks, gums, tongue, floor of the mouth, palate and throat. They may gently feel the tissues and the neck for lumps or swelling. Dentures may need to be removed so all areas can be seen. The process takes only a few minutes and is often part of a routine exam.

Asking about symptoms

The dentist may ask about any symptoms you have noticed, such as pain, numbness or difficulty swallowing, and how long they have been present. Mention any sores, patches or lumps you have seen, even if they seem minor. Your observations help the dentist understand what is new or changing and what may need closer follow-up.

If something is found

Finding a change does not mean it is cancer.

Monitoring a change

Many unusual areas are caused by irritation, infection or other harmless conditions. The dentist may recommend removing a possible cause, such as a sharp tooth edge or rubbing denture, and rechecking the area in a couple of weeks. Photos may be taken to help compare changes over time. Keep any follow-up appointments as advised by the dentist.

Referral for further testing

If an area looks suspicious or does not improve, the dentist may recommend referral to a specialist for further evaluation, which may include a biopsy. The dentist will explain why the referral is suggested and what to expect. Early evaluation helps ensure that if a serious condition is present, it can be managed promptly by the right team.

Reducing risk

Some risk factors can be reduced.

  1. Lifestyle changes that help

Quitting tobacco, reducing alcohol and protecting your lips from the sun can lower the risk of oral cancer. If you would like support to quit smoking or vaping, ask your physician or pharmacist about available resources. Small, sustained changes are often more achievable than large ones attempted all at once, and every reduction helps. Ask the team about local support options.

  2. Keeping up with checkups

Regular dental visits provide opportunities for the soft tissues of the mouth to be examined. Between visits, look in a mirror occasionally and report any changes that last more than a couple of weeks. Denture wearers should continue regular checkups, since their soft tissues still need monitoring even without any natural teeth remaining. Bring the denture to each visit.

Planning your appointment

Raise any concern when you book.

Contact our Port Dover office from Bloomsburg if you have noticed a sore, patch or lump in your mouth. Describe how long it has been present so the team can arrange an appropriate examination.

Bring a list of medications and mention tobacco or alcohol use honestly, since it helps the dentist assess your risk accurately.

Oral cancer screening questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Is oral cancer screening painful?

No. It involves looking at and gently feeling the tissues of the mouth and neck. It usually takes only a few minutes and is often part of a routine dental exam. Let the dentist know if any area feels tender.

How often should I be screened?

The soft tissues are usually examined at regular dental visits. People with higher risk factors may benefit from closer monitoring. The dentist will suggest an approach based on your history and any findings from earlier exams.

What if the dentist finds something unusual?

Many changes are harmless. The dentist may recommend rechecking the area or referring you for further evaluation. They will explain why and what to expect, so you understand the next steps clearly and can ask questions.

Can denture wearers get oral cancer?

Yes. Oral cancer can occur whether or not you have natural teeth. Denture wearers should continue regular checkups so the soft tissues can be examined and the fit of the denture checked for rubbing or pressure spots.

Does a screening mean I have cancer?

No. Screening is a routine check to look for changes that may need attention. It does not diagnose cancer. If something unusual is found, further evaluation helps determine what it is and whether treatment is needed.
