Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative breathed through a small mask that rests over the nose. It can help reduce anxiety and make dental treatment feel more manageable while you remain conscious and able to respond. Its effects begin within minutes and fade soon after the gas is switched off, which makes it a practical comfort option for some patients.
Windham Centre patients who feel nervous about dental visits can ask our Port Dover dentists whether nitrous oxide is suitable for them. The dentist will review your health history and the treatment planned before recommending it, and will explain clearly what to expect during the appointment and afterward.

Is it suitable
Nitrous oxide may help people with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex or difficulty sitting still through longer procedures. It is also sometimes used for children who are nervous but able to cooperate. It does not replace local anaesthetic, which is still used to numb the specific area being treated, but it can make that whole experience feel easier.
Certain conditions, such as some lung diseases, recent ear or sinus surgery, early pregnancy or particular vitamin deficiencies, may make nitrous oxide unsuitable. A blocked nose can also make it hard to breathe through the mask effectively. Share your full medical history and current medications so the dentist can make a safe, well-informed recommendation for you.
What it feels like
Once the mask is in place, you simply breathe normally through your nose. Within a few minutes you may feel warm, tingly or pleasantly lightheaded, and the edge of your anxiety may soften. Some people feel a little giggly. The dentist adjusts the level to keep you comfortable and monitors you throughout the procedure, changing it as needed.
You remain awake and can talk with the team at any point. If the feeling becomes unpleasant or too strong, tell the dentist and the level can be turned down. Nitrous oxide does not put you to sleep, and you should still be able to follow instructions, answer questions and use an agreed signal if you need a break.
Preparing
A light meal a couple of hours before your appointment is often recommended, since either an empty stomach or a heavy meal may make nausea more likely. Follow any specific instructions the dentist gives you. Bring a list of your medications and let the team know about any recent colds, sinus congestion or illnesses that might affect your breathing.
Because nitrous oxide wears off quickly, many adults are able to drive home once the dentist confirms they have fully recovered. Ask the team for guidance that applies to your situation before the day. Different instructions may apply for children, or if other sedatives are being used at the same appointment, so it is worth clarifying in advance.
Recovery
At the end of treatment you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the nitrous oxide from your system. The team will check that you feel clear-headed and steady before you leave the chair. A mild headache or brief nausea occasionally occurs afterward, but it usually passes quickly with a few minutes of rest and some fresh air.
Most people return to their normal activities soon after the appointment. Follow any aftercare instructions for the dental treatment you received, such as care around a new filling or an extraction site. If you notice unusual symptoms or feel unwell later in the day, contact the office for advice rather than waiting until your next visit.
Planning your appointment
When booking at our Port Dover office, mention that you are interested in nitrous oxide. Windham Centre patients can discuss their anxiety and health history so the dentist can plan the appointment with comfort in mind.
Mention any respiratory conditions, pregnancy or recent surgeries, and bring a current medication list to the appointment with you on the day.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative. You remain awake and able to talk with the team, but you should feel more relaxed and less anxious during treatment. Many people say time seems to pass more quickly.
When it is appropriately administered and monitored, nitrous oxide is considered safe for many patients. The dentist will review your health history and current medications to make sure it suits you before it is used.
Yes, it is commonly used for anxious children who can breathe through their nose and tolerate the mask. The dentist will assess whether it is appropriate for your child and explain how they would be monitored.
Usually, yes. Nitrous oxide helps with anxiety but does not numb the tooth itself. Local anaesthetic is still used for most procedures, although many people find that nitrous oxide makes the injection feel easier to cope with.
Many adults can drive once the effects have worn off and the dentist confirms recovery. Ask the team for advice based on your treatment and any other medications used, and arrange a driver if you are unsure.
