Nitrous oxide is a gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a mask over the nose. It produces a relaxed, sometimes light-headed feeling while you remain awake and able to respond. Its effects begin quickly and fade soon after the gas is stopped. It is one of several options for helping anxious patients or those having longer procedures feel more comfortable.
If nervousness has made dental care difficult, people from Wilsonville can ask our Port Dover team whether nitrous oxide may be appropriate. The dentist will review your health history, the planned treatment and any concerns before recommending it, and explain how it fits with local anaesthetic.

Is it right?
Nitrous oxide may help people with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex or difficulty sitting still for longer appointments. It is also used for some children. Because effects wear off quickly, many adults can resume normal activities soon afterward, once the dentist confirms they have recovered.
It may not be suitable for people with certain lung conditions, recent ear or eye surgery, some vitamin deficiencies or nasal blockage. It is generally avoided early in pregnancy. Share your full medical history and medications so the dentist can determine whether nitrous oxide is safe for you.
Before treatment
Follow the instructions you are given about eating beforehand; a light meal is often recommended rather than a heavy one. Take regular medications as usual unless advised otherwise. Wear comfortable clothing. If you have a cold or blocked nose, let the office know, as it may affect how well you can breathe the gas.
Tell the team about any respiratory conditions, pregnancy, recent surgeries and previous experiences with sedation. Let them know what aspects of dental care worry you most. This helps the dentist plan the appointment and explain what you will feel.
During care
A small mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally. The dentist gradually adjusts the level of gas until you feel relaxed. Many people describe a warm, floating or tingling sensation. Local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area being treated, since nitrous oxide does not block pain on its own.
You can talk, respond to instructions and signal if you need a break. If you feel uncomfortable or too light-headed, tell the dentist and the level can be reduced. At the end of treatment, you breathe oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the gas.
Afterward
Most people feel back to normal shortly after the gas is stopped and oxygen is given. The dentist will check that you are alert before you leave. Some people may be advised to have someone accompany them, especially children. Follow any specific instructions about driving or activities.
Mild headache or nausea can occasionally occur. Contact the office if these persist or if you have any unexpected symptoms. Discuss your experience at your next visit so the dentist can adjust the approach if needed.
