Nitrous oxide is a gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small nose mask during dental treatment. It can help reduce anxiety and make the time in the chair feel more relaxed. You remain awake and able to respond, and the effects usually wear off soon after the mask is removed. It is not suitable for everyone, so assessment comes first.
Walsingham patients who feel nervous about dental work can ask whether nitrous oxide is an option at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health, the planned procedure and your comfort needs, then explain what using it would involve and whether any alternatives might suit you better.

Who it helps
People with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex or difficulty sitting still for treatment may benefit. It can also help some children cope with procedures. Nitrous oxide works alongside local anaesthetic, which is still used to numb the tooth. It helps with relaxation rather than pain control on its own.
It may not be suitable for people with certain lung conditions, recent ear or eye surgery, some vitamin deficiencies, severe nasal congestion or during early pregnancy. Some people simply do not like the sensation. The dentist reviews your medical history before recommending it and will discuss other options if it is not a good fit.
Before treatment
Tell the dentist about all medications, breathing problems, pregnancy and any past reactions to sedation. Let them know if you have a cold or blocked nose on the day, since breathing through the nose is needed. This information helps the dentist decide whether nitrous oxide is safe and appropriate for your visit.
A light meal a couple of hours beforehand is often recommended, as a very full stomach can increase nausea for some people. Follow any specific instructions the team gives you. Ask whether you need someone to accompany you, though many adults can drive after nitrous oxide once the effects have fully worn off.
How it feels
A small mask is placed over your nose, and you breathe normally. Within a few minutes, many people feel relaxed, warm, tingly or slightly light-headed. You stay awake, can hear instructions and can speak to the team. Some people find time seems to pass more quickly during treatment.
The dentist can adjust the level of nitrous oxide to keep you comfortable. Let the team know if you feel too drowsy, nauseated or uncomfortable. At the end of treatment, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the gas from your system before getting up.
Afterwards
The effects of nitrous oxide fade quickly once the gas is stopped. The team will check that you feel alert and steady before you leave. Many adults can return to normal activities soon after, though it is wise to follow any advice about driving or activities given by the dentist on the day.
Mild nausea or a headache can occur occasionally and usually passes. Contact the office if you feel unwell for an extended period after treatment. If nitrous oxide helped, mention it when booking future appointments so it can be planned. If it did not help, ask about other comfort strategies.
Planning your appointment
When Walsingham patients book with our Port Dover office, they can mention dental anxiety and ask whether nitrous oxide may be suitable. The dentist will confirm after reviewing health history.
Bring a full medication list and let the team know about breathing conditions, pregnancy or congestion before the appointment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You stay awake and able to respond to the dental team. Nitrous oxide helps you feel more relaxed but does not put you to sleep.
Many adults can drive once the effects have fully worn off and the team confirms you are alert. Follow the dentist’s advice for your specific situation.
It is commonly used to help some children relax during dental treatment. The dentist will assess your child’s health and needs before recommending it.
No. It helps with relaxation. Local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area being treated so you do not feel pain.
Responses vary. If it is not effective or comfortable, the dentist can discuss other options, including non-medication strategies or different forms of sedation where appropriate.
Sedation may help some patients through longer or more stressful dental care. Walsingham patients can learn about types, safety checks, preparation and getting home safely.
