Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaA lighter form of relaxation
Nitrous oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, is a mild sedative breathed in through a small mask over the nose. It can help reduce anxiety and make treatment feel more manageable while you remain awake and able to respond. Its effects typically wear off fairly quickly once the gas is stopped, though suitability depends on your health and the procedure planned.
If you are anxious about dental care and live in Villa Nova, ask our Port Dover team whether nitrous oxide might be an option for your treatment. The dentist will review your health history before recommending it.

Who it may help
People with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex or difficulty sitting through longer procedures may find nitrous oxide helpful. It is sometimes used for children as well, when appropriate. Discuss your concerns openly so the dentist can judge whether it is a good fit for you.
Certain health conditions, early pregnancy, some respiratory problems and specific medications may make nitrous oxide unsuitable. Blocked nasal passages can also make it less effective. Share your full medical history, and the dentist will explain whether nitrous oxide is safe and appropriate in your situation.
Preparing
Tell the team about all medical conditions, medications, supplements and whether you might be pregnant. Mention any past experiences with sedation or anaesthesia. If you have a cold or congestion on the day of treatment, let the office know, as it may affect how well the gas works.
Follow any instructions about eating before the appointment. Wear comfortable clothing. Although the effects of nitrous oxide often wear off quickly, ask the team whether you should arrange a ride home, and follow their advice about driving afterward.
During treatment
A small mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally. The dentist adjusts the level gradually. Many people feel lightheaded, warm or tingly, and some feel a pleasant sense of calm. Local anaesthetic is still used for procedures that need numbing, as nitrous oxide does not block pain on its own.
You stay conscious and can respond to questions throughout. Tell the team if you feel uncomfortable, nauseous or too drowsy, as the level can be adjusted. At the end, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the gas.
Afterward
Most people feel back to normal soon after the gas is stopped, but some feel tired or lightheaded for a while. Rest briefly before leaving. Follow the team’s advice about driving and returning to activities, and contact the office if you have any concerns afterward.
If nitrous oxide helped you through treatment, mention it when booking future appointments. Over time, some patients find their anxiety decreases with positive experiences. The dentist can also discuss other strategies to support comfort at each visit.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and mention that you are interested in nitrous oxide. The team can explain whether it is available for your planned treatment and what preparation involves.
Share your medical history and medications in advance, and ask whether you should arrange transportation home.
