Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small mask over the nose. It can help you feel calmer, lighter and less bothered by the sounds and sensations of dental work, while you stay awake and able to respond. Its effects usually wear off quickly once the gas is turned off and you breathe pure oxygen.
For patients from Vanessa who feel nervous about dental visits, nitrous oxide may be an option at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health and the treatment planned to decide whether it is appropriate, and will explain how it works before you decide whether to use it.

Who it helps
People with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, difficulty sitting still for longer procedures or children who need help relaxing may benefit from nitrous oxide. It does not replace local anaesthetic for numbing a tooth, but it can make the experience feel easier. The dentist will discuss whether it fits your needs and the specific procedure planned.
Nitrous oxide may not be recommended during pregnancy, or for people with certain lung conditions, severe nasal congestion, some vitamin deficiencies or particular medical histories. Tell the dentist about all health conditions and medications. If nitrous oxide is not appropriate, other ways to manage anxiety can be discussed with you, so you are not left without options.
How it feels
Within a few minutes of breathing the gas, many people feel relaxed, warm or tingly, and less concerned about what is happening. Some feel slightly light-headed or giggly. You remain conscious, can hear the dentist and respond to instructions. The level can be adjusted during treatment if you feel too little or too much effect, so tell the team how you feel.
You can speak up at any time if you feel uncomfortable, nauseous or want the level changed. Breathing through your nose keeps the effect steady. The dentist and team monitor you throughout the procedure. Local anaesthetic is still used for numbing when needed, since nitrous oxide alone does not block pain from dental work on a tooth.
Before and after
Eat a light meal a few hours before your appointment unless the dentist gives you different instructions, since a very full or empty stomach can increase nausea. Wear comfortable clothing. Let the team know about any recent colds or congestion, since a blocked nose can make the gas less effective. Bring a list of your medications to the appointment.
At the end of treatment, the dentist switches to pure oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the gas from your system. Most adults feel back to normal quickly. The dentist will advise you on whether you can drive afterward and when you can return to usual activities. Children should be supervised by an adult afterward.
Safety
Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for many years and is generally considered safe when properly administered and monitored. The dentist controls the mixture of gas and oxygen and watches how you respond. Side effects, such as nausea or headache, are usually mild and short-lived, especially once you breathe pure oxygen at the end of the appointment.
Nitrous oxide can be combined with other approaches to make visits easier, such as clear explanations, breaks, signals and shorter appointments. For people with severe anxiety or complex procedures, other forms of sedation may be discussed. The dentist will explain the options so you can choose what feels manageable for you, both now and at future visits.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and mention that you are interested in nitrous oxide when booking. The dentist will review your health and the treatment planned to see whether it is suitable for your visit.
Bring a list of medications and let the team know if you are pregnant, have breathing problems or have nasal congestion on the day.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You remain awake and able to respond, though you may feel relaxed, light-headed or less aware of time passing. You can talk with the dentist and let them know if you want the level adjusted.
Many adults recover quickly after breathing pure oxygen at the end of treatment, but the dentist will advise you based on how you feel. Some people prefer to arrange a ride, and children should be accompanied by an adult.
It is commonly used to help children relax during dental care. The dentist will review your child’s health history and the planned treatment to decide whether it is appropriate and explain what to expect, both during and after the visit.
No. Nitrous oxide helps you relax but does not block pain from dental work. Local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area when needed, so you stay comfortable during the procedure while the gas helps you relax.
Some people experience mild nausea, headache or light-headedness, which usually fade quickly after breathing oxygen. Let the team know right away if you feel unwell during or after treatment, so the level can be lowered or stopped.
For strong anxiety or longer procedures, sedation may help. Vanessa patients can learn about the types available, safety checks and preparing for the trip home.
When a child dreads the dentist, pacing and honest words help. Vanessa parents can plan calmer visits with our Port Dover team, moving at the child’s speed.
