Caring for Turkey Point patients at our Port Dover office

Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative breathed through a small mask over the nose. It can help reduce anxiety and make treatment feel more relaxed. You remain awake and able to respond, and its effects wear off quickly once the mask is removed. It is not suitable for everyone, so an assessment comes first.
If anxiety has been keeping you from dental care, Turkey Point patients can ask about nitrous oxide at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your medical history and explain whether it is an appropriate option.

Who it may help
People with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still for longer procedures or heightened sensitivity may benefit. It is sometimes used for children when appropriate. The dentist considers the type of treatment, your comfort level and your overall health when deciding whether to offer it.
Certain conditions, including some respiratory illnesses, recent ear or eye surgery, specific vitamin deficiencies and early pregnancy, may make nitrous oxide inadvisable. A blocked nose can also make it hard to breathe the gas effectively. Share your full medical history and medications so the dentist can make a safe recommendation.
Before the appointment
Let the dentist know about any lung, sinus or ear conditions, recent illness or medications. If you have had nitrous oxide before, describe how you responded. Discuss what you hope it will help with, whether general nervousness, needle anxiety or gagging, so expectations are realistic.
A light meal a couple of hours beforehand is often recommended, since nausea can occur on an empty or very full stomach. Ask the office for their specific instructions. Many people can drive afterward once the effects have fully worn off, but confirm this with the dentist for your situation.
During treatment
A small mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally. The dentist gradually increases the amount of nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen. Many people feel warm, tingly, light or pleasantly detached within a few minutes. Local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area being treated.
You will remain awake and able to communicate. Let the dentist know if you feel too drowsy, uncomfortable or nauseous, and the level can be adjusted. Breathing through your nose rather than your mouth helps the gas work effectively. The team monitors you throughout the procedure.
Recovery
At the end of treatment, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the nitrous oxide from your system. Most people feel alert again quickly. Some may feel slightly lightheaded or have a mild headache briefly. Take your time getting up from the chair.
The dentist will confirm when you are ready to leave. Even though recovery is usually quick, some patients prefer to have someone accompany them, particularly for a first experience. If you will be heading back to Turkey Point afterward, ask the team whether waiting a short while before driving is advisable.
Planning your appointment
