Light, adjustable relaxation

A mild sedative that wears off quickly after treatment.

Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative breathed through a small mask over the nose. It can help patients feel calmer and more relaxed during dental treatment while remaining awake and able to respond. The effects can be adjusted during the appointment and usually fade within minutes once the gas is stopped.

If anxiety, a strong gag reflex or difficulty sitting through treatment has made visits hard, Townsend patients can ask about nitrous oxide at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health history and the planned procedure to decide whether it is a suitable option for you.

Is it suitable?

Nitrous oxide suits many, but not all, patients.

  • Who may benefit

Nitrous oxide may help people with mild to moderate anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex or trouble staying still through a longer procedure. It is also used for some children who need a little extra help to settle. It does not replace the local anaesthetic that numbs a tooth, but it can make the whole experience feel calmer and more manageable from start to finish.

  • Health factors to discuss

Tell the dentist about pregnancy, breathing conditions, a blocked nose on the day, recent ear or eye surgery, certain vitamin deficiencies and any history of substance use. Some of these make nitrous oxide less suitable or mean it should be postponed. The dentist will explain whether it is appropriate for you and talk through other comfort options if it is not.

Before the appointment

Preparation is usually simple.

Eating and planning for the day

A light meal a couple of hours before treatment is often recommended, since arriving on a very full or completely empty stomach can make nausea more likely. Follow any specific instructions the office gives you. Because the effects wear off quickly, many adults are able to drive themselves home afterwards, but confirm this with the dentist when you book rather than assuming.

Questions to ask beforehand

Ask how the gas is likely to feel, how long it will be used and how you will be monitored during treatment. If you have had nitrous oxide before, share how you responded, whether you felt relaxed, queasy or barely noticed it. Knowing what to expect in advance can take the edge off anxiety before the appointment even begins.

During treatment

You remain awake and able to communicate.

  1. Breathing through the nose mask

A small, soft mask is placed over your nose, and you simply breathe normally. The dentist gradually adjusts the amount of nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen until you feel relaxed. Many people describe a light, warm or tingling sensation in the hands and feet, or a sense that time is passing more quickly than usual while treatment goes on.

  2. Staying aware and in control

You can still hear the dentist, answer questions and raise a hand if you need a break. If you feel dizzy, uncomfortable or slightly sick, say so and the level can be turned down right away. Local anaesthetic is still used to numb the tooth or area being treated, so the two work together rather than one replacing the other.

Afterwards

Recovery is usually quick.

Breathing oxygen to clear the gas

When treatment is finished, you will breathe pure oxygen through the same mask for a few minutes to help clear the nitrous oxide from your system. Most people feel back to normal shortly afterwards. The team will check that you feel steady and clear-headed before you get up from the chair and head out to the waiting area.

Returning to normal activities

A few people notice a mild headache or queasiness after nitrous oxide, which usually passes within a short time. If you still feel unwell, let the team know before leaving rather than heading straight home. Follow any aftercare instructions for the dental treatment itself, such as waiting for numbness to wear off before eating or drinking anything hot.

Questions about nitrous oxide

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will I be asleep with nitrous oxide?

No. Nitrous oxide helps you feel relaxed, but you stay awake and able to respond throughout. You can talk to the dentist and signal if you need a pause. It is a lighter form of sedation than oral medications or deeper options.

Can I drive after nitrous oxide?

Because the effects usually wear off within minutes of breathing oxygen, many adults can drive afterwards. Confirm this with the dentist before your appointment, and do not drive if you feel unsteady, dizzy or unwell in any way.

Is nitrous oxide safe for children?

It is used for some children to help them relax during treatment. The dentist will review your child’s health history and explain how it works before recommending it. Not every child needs it, and it is not suitable for every child.

Does nitrous oxide numb my teeth?

No. Nitrous oxide helps with relaxation, while local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area being treated. Used together, they can make treatment considerably more comfortable for patients who feel anxious or find appointments difficult.

Are there side effects?

Some people experience mild nausea, a headache or brief dizziness, which usually pass quickly. Eating a light meal beforehand may help. Let the team know if you feel unwell during or after the appointment so the level or recovery time can be adjusted.
