A lighter way to relax

Nitrous oxide can ease nerves while you stay awake and responsive.

Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small mask over the nose. It usually takes effect within minutes, producing a calm, relaxed or slightly floaty feeling while you remain awake and able to respond. Because its effects fade quickly once the gas is stopped, it is often used for people with mild to moderate dental anxiety.

Silver Hill patients who are curious about nitrous oxide can ask about it at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health history, the treatment planned and your comfort concerns to decide whether it is a suitable option for you, and explain how it works alongside freezing.

Who it suits

Nitrous oxide is a good fit for some patients, not all.

When nitrous oxide may help

It can help adults and children who feel nervous about dental work, have a sensitive gag reflex or find it hard to sit still for longer procedures. Because it works quickly and wears off soon after, it suits people who want to relax without a deeper level of sedation. It is often paired with local anaesthetic, which still numbs the tooth.

When it may not be appropriate

Some conditions, such as certain lung problems, a blocked nose, recent ear or eye surgery, early pregnancy and some vitamin deficiencies, may make nitrous oxide unsuitable. People who find it hard to breathe through the nose may also struggle with the mask. Share your full health history so the dentist can assess whether it is safe for you.

Preparing

Simple preparation helps the sedation work smoothly.

  • Eating and medications

Follow any instructions about eating before the appointment; a light meal beforehand is often recommended rather than a heavy one, but confirm what applies to you. Continue taking regular medications unless told otherwise, and bring a list of everything you take. Let the team know if you have a cold or congestion, as breathing through your nose is important.

  • Questions to ask beforehand

Ask how long the sedation will be used, whether you will still need freezing and how soon you can leave afterward. If you have used nitrous oxide before, mention how it affected you. Parents can ask how the experience will be explained to their child and whether they can stay nearby during the treatment.

During treatment

You remain awake and can communicate throughout.

  1. Breathing the gas

A small mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally. The dentist gradually adjusts the mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen until you feel relaxed. Many people describe tingling in the hands or feet, warmth or a pleasant heaviness. If you feel too drowsy, uncomfortable or nauseated, tell the team and the level can be lowered.

  2. Staying in control

You will be able to hear the dentist, answer questions and follow instructions. Breathing through your nose keeps the effect steady, while talking a lot through your mouth can lessen it. The dentist monitors your response during treatment and adjusts the gas as needed so that you stay comfortable and responsive.

Recovery

The effects usually wear off quickly after treatment ends.

Clearing the gas

At the end of the procedure, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the nitrous oxide from your system. Most people feel back to normal soon after. The dentist will check how you are feeling before you get up from the chair, and you can take a few moments to sit before standing.

Returning to your day

Many adults can return to normal activities shortly afterward, but follow the specific advice you are given about driving and work. Children should be watched by a parent for the rest of the visit and on the way home. If you feel unwell, dizzy or nauseated after leaving, contact the office for advice.

Nitrous oxide questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will I be asleep with nitrous oxide?

No. Nitrous oxide provides mild sedation, so you stay awake and able to respond. Most people feel relaxed and less bothered by the sounds and sensations of treatment. If you need deeper sedation, the dentist can explain other options and whether a referral is needed.

Is nitrous oxide safe for children?

It can be suitable for many children when used by trained dental professionals, but each child is assessed individually. The dentist will review your child’s health, explain how it works and monitor them closely throughout. Parents can ask questions before deciding.

Do I still need freezing?

Usually, yes. Nitrous oxide helps you relax but does not numb the tooth. Local anaesthetic is often still used to keep the treated area comfortable. The dentist will explain how the two work together for your particular procedure and comfort needs.

Can I drive after nitrous oxide?

Many adults can drive after the gas has cleared and they feel normal, but this depends on the individual and the dentist’s advice. Ask before your appointment so you can arrange transport if needed, which is worth planning for a longer rural drive home.

What if nitrous oxide makes me feel sick?

Some people feel nauseated, especially at higher levels or on a very full stomach. Tell the dentist right away, and the mix can be adjusted or stopped. Eating lightly beforehand may help. Let the team know if you have felt this way before.
