Nitrous oxide is a gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small mask over the nose. It produces a light, relaxed feeling while you stay awake and able to respond. Its effects usually begin within minutes and fade quickly once the gas is stopped. It is used alongside local anaesthetic, not instead of it.
For Selkirk patients, one practical advantage is that the effects of nitrous oxide typically wear off before leaving the office, though the dentist will confirm whether you are ready to drive. Ask our Port Dover team whether it is offered for your planned treatment and whether it suits your health history.

Is it suitable?
Nitrous oxide may help people with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex or difficulty sitting through longer appointments. It is sometimes used for children who are nervous but able to cooperate. It does not put you to sleep, so it suits people who want to feel calmer while remaining aware and able to communicate.
It may not be suitable during certain stages of pregnancy, with some lung conditions, recent ear or eye surgery, severe nasal congestion or certain vitamin deficiencies. Tell the dentist about all medical conditions and medications. If nitrous oxide is not appropriate, other comfort strategies or sedation options may be discussed depending on your needs.
How it feels
After the mask is placed, you breathe normally through your nose. Within a few minutes, many people feel relaxed, warm or slightly tingly in the hands and feet. Sounds may seem more distant. Some feel light-headed. The dentist adjusts the level to keep you comfortable and will check in with you throughout the appointment.
You remain conscious and can speak, follow instructions and signal if you need a pause. If the feeling becomes unpleasant, tell the dentist, and the level can be lowered or the gas stopped. Breathing through the mouth reduces the effect, so the team may remind you to breathe through your nose during treatment.
Preparing
Share your full medical history, including respiratory conditions, recent illnesses, medications and whether you are or could be pregnant. If you have a cold or blocked nose on the day, let the office know, as nitrous oxide is breathed through the nose and congestion can make it less effective. The appointment may need to be rescheduled.
Many offices suggest eating a light meal beforehand, as nausea is less likely on a mostly empty but not completely empty stomach. Follow any instructions the office gives you. Ask whether someone should accompany you, particularly for children or if other sedation might be combined with the nitrous oxide.
Afterwards
At the end of treatment, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the gas. Most people feel back to normal shortly afterward. The dentist will check that you are alert and steady before you leave. Ask whether it is safe to drive or return to work, as the advice may vary with your situation.
Some people experience mild nausea, a headache or light-headedness, which usually passes quickly. Tell the team if you feel unwell after treatment. If you had a strong reaction, mention it before future appointments, so the approach can be adjusted. Nitrous oxide can be used again at later visits if it worked well for you.
Planning your appointment
When booking at our Port Dover office, ask whether nitrous oxide is available for your procedure and mention your medical history. The team can confirm any preparation needed.
Let the office know if you develop a cold or blocked nose before the appointment, since this can affect how well the gas works.

No. Nitrous oxide is a light form of sedation. You remain awake, can respond to the dentist and can signal if you need a break. Most people feel relaxed and less aware of time passing during the appointment.
Its effects usually wear off quickly after the gas is stopped and oxygen is given. Many people can drive afterward, but the dentist will confirm you are ready before you leave. Follow their advice, especially if other sedation was used.
It is sometimes used for children who are anxious but able to cooperate. Suitability depends on the child’s health and needs. The dentist will discuss it with parents beforehand and explain how the child will be monitored throughout.
No. Nitrous oxide helps you relax but does not numb the tooth. Local anaesthetic is still used for procedures that need it. The two are often used together to make treatment as comfortable as possible for you.
Some people experience mild nausea. Tell the dentist if you feel unwell; the level can be reduced or the gas stopped. Eating a light meal beforehand may help. Mention any past reactions before future visits so plans can be adjusted.
Sedation can help some patients through anxiety or longer procedures. Selkirk patients can discuss options, safety and travel planning at our Port Dover office.
