Mild sedation you breathe in

Nitrous oxide can take the edge off nerves while you stay awake and responsive.

Nitrous oxide is a gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small mask over the nose. It produces a relaxed, sometimes light or tingly feeling within minutes, while you remain awake and able to respond. When the gas is stopped and oxygen is given, the effects usually wear off fairly quickly, which sets it apart from stronger forms of sedation.

For Renton patients who feel anxious about dental treatment, have a strong gag reflex or find long procedures difficult, the dentist at our Port Dover office can discuss whether nitrous oxide might help. Suitability depends on your health, the treatment planned and your preferences, so a conversation before the appointment is an important first step.

Is it suitable?

Nitrous oxide suits many patients but not everyone.

  • Who it may help

People with mild to moderate dental anxiety, those who gag easily, patients undergoing longer procedures and some children may benefit from nitrous oxide. It can make injections and treatment feel more manageable. It is not a substitute for local anaesthetic, which is still used to numb the area being treated; rather, it helps you feel calmer throughout.

  • When it may not be appropriate

Some conditions, such as certain lung diseases, recent ear or eye surgery, early pregnancy, a blocked nose or specific vitamin deficiencies, may make nitrous oxide unsuitable. Tell the dentist about your full medical history and medications. Claustrophobia with a nose mask is also worth mentioning. The dentist will advise whether it is a safe option for you.

Before the visit

A little preparation helps the appointment go smoothly.

What to tell the team

Share your health history, including breathing problems, recent illnesses and medications. Explain what makes you anxious so the dentist can combine nitrous oxide with other comfort measures where helpful. Ask any questions you have about how it feels, how long it lasts and what the dentist will monitor while you are breathing the gas during treatment.

Eating and planning

The team may advise eating a light meal beforehand rather than coming with a full stomach, which can reduce nausea. Wear comfortable clothing. Ask whether you should arrange for someone to accompany you or drive you home, as recommendations can vary. Renton patients should confirm these details in advance so travel plans can be arranged properly.

During treatment

The dentist adjusts the level for your comfort.

  1. Starting the gas

A small mask is placed over your nose, and you breathe normally. The dentist starts with oxygen and gradually adds nitrous oxide until you feel relaxed. Many people describe warmth, tingling in fingers and toes, a sense of heaviness or a light, floating feeling. Breathe through your nose, and let the team know how you feel.

  2. Staying in control

You remain awake and can talk and respond to instructions. If the feeling becomes too strong or uncomfortable, tell the dentist, who can reduce the level immediately. Local anaesthetic is usually given once you are relaxed. Throughout the procedure, you can signal for a break, just as you would without sedation. Agree on the signal beforehand.

Recovery

Most people recover quickly from nitrous oxide.

Wearing off

At the end of treatment, the nitrous oxide is turned off and you breathe oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the gas. Most people feel back to normal fairly soon. You may be asked to rest briefly in the chair before standing. Tell the team if you feel dizzy, nauseated or unsteady at all.

Returning to activities

The dentist will advise when it is safe to drive and resume normal activities, based on how you feel and the guidance used at the office. Follow any aftercare instructions for the dental procedure itself, such as care after a filling or extraction. If anything feels unusual later in the day, contact the office for advice.

Nitrous oxide questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Will I be asleep with nitrous oxide?

No. You remain awake and able to respond to questions and instructions. Nitrous oxide helps you feel relaxed and calmer during treatment. If you need deeper sedation, the dentist can discuss whether other options are appropriate.

Is nitrous oxide safe?

Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for many years and is considered safe for many patients when properly administered and monitored. Some health conditions may make it unsuitable, so share your full medical history with the dentist beforehand.

Can children have nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is used for some children to help them relax during treatment. The dentist will assess the child’s health and needs and explain the process to parents before making a recommendation about whether it is appropriate.

Will I still need freezing?

Usually, yes. Nitrous oxide helps with relaxation but does not numb the treatment area. Local anaesthetic is typically used once you are comfortable, and many people find the injection easier to manage while relaxed and calm.

Can I drive after nitrous oxide?

The effects generally wear off quickly once oxygen is given, but the dentist will advise when it is safe to drive based on how you feel and office guidelines. Confirm arrangements before your appointment so you can plan your trip home.
