Caring for Port Ryerse patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Port RyerseLight, adjustable relaxation
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is breathed through a small mask over the nose. It produces a relaxed, sometimes tingly or floaty feeling while you remain awake and able to respond. Its effects build quickly and fade soon after the gas is stopped, which makes it a common choice for mild to moderate dental anxiety.
If you are coming from Port Ryerse and wonder whether nitrous oxide could help, ask our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health history, the planned treatment and your comfort needs to determine whether it is suitable and what preparation is required.

Is it suitable
Nitrous oxide may help people with mild to moderate anxiety, a strong gag reflex, difficulty sitting still for long periods or sensitivity during cleanings or fillings. It is used for both adults and children. It does not replace local anaesthetic, which is still used to numb the area being treated.
Certain conditions, such as some respiratory problems, recent ear or eye surgery, early pregnancy, certain vitamin deficiencies or nasal congestion that prevents breathing through the nose, may affect suitability. Share your full medical history and medications so the dentist can decide safely.
What it feels like
As you breathe through the nose mask, you may feel warm, heavy or slightly tingly in your hands and feet. Sounds may seem distant and time may pass more quickly. The dentist adjusts the level to keep you comfortable. If the feeling is too strong, tell the team so they can reduce it.
You remain conscious, able to breathe on your own and respond to instructions. You can communicate throughout. Some people feel mildly nauseous, especially if they ate a heavy meal beforehand. Agreeing on a signal to pause helps you feel in control during the appointment.
Preparation
Follow the instructions you are given about eating beforehand; a light meal is often recommended rather than a large one or an empty stomach. Continue usual medications unless advised otherwise. Mention any congestion or colds, since breathing through the nose is necessary for the gas to work.
Recovery is usually quick, and many adults can drive afterward once the dentist confirms the effects have worn off. Policies and individual responses vary, so ask in advance. Children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Allow a few extra minutes after treatment before leaving.
Recovery
At the end of treatment, oxygen is given for a few minutes to help clear the gas. Most people feel back to normal shortly after. You may still feel the effects of local anaesthetic in the treated area, so take care eating and drinking until numbness fades.
Contact the office if you have persistent dizziness, headache or nausea after leaving. These are uncommon. If nitrous oxide did not help as much as hoped, mention it, as other comfort strategies or sedation options might be discussed for future visits.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and mention your interest in nitrous oxide when booking. The team will ask about your health and the procedure to discuss whether it can be planned.
Ask whether you can drive afterward and what to eat beforehand, so the trip home is planned in advance.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You stay awake, can breathe on your own and respond to the dental team. It reduces anxiety and helps you relax but does not cause unconsciousness.
It is commonly used for children when appropriate. The dentist will assess your child’s health and needs before recommending it, and will monitor them throughout treatment.
Many adults can drive once the effects have fully worn off, which usually happens quickly. Ask the office about their guidance and how you are likely to respond before planning transport.
No. Nitrous oxide helps you relax, but local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area being treated. The two work together to keep you comfortable.
Some people experience mild nausea, headache or dizziness, usually brief. Eating a light meal beforehand may help. Report any persistent symptoms to the office.
Sedation can help some patients through anxiety or longer procedures. Port Ryerse patients can discuss options, safety and planning with our Port Dover dentist.
Some children find dental visits scary. Port Ryerse parents can share their child’s fears and plan a slower, more predictable visit at our Port Dover office.
