Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative inhaled through a small nose mask during treatment. It can help you feel calmer and more relaxed while remaining awake and able to respond. Its effects wear off quickly once the gas is stopped, which is one reason it is a commonly used option for anxious adults and children.
If you are a Peacock Point patient who feels nervous about dental work, ask our Port Dover office whether nitrous oxide may be appropriate. The dentist will review your health and the planned treatment before recommending it.

How it works
Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and breathed through a mask that fits over the nose. Within a few minutes, many people feel light, relaxed or slightly tingly. Some describe a warm or floaty feeling. The dentist adjusts the level to keep you comfortable. Local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area being treated.
With nitrous oxide, you remain conscious and able to hear and respond to the dentist. It does not put you to sleep. Some people find their sense of time changes, making the appointment feel shorter. If you feel too drowsy or uncomfortable, tell the dentist, who can adjust or stop the gas immediately.
Suitability
Nitrous oxide can help people with mild to moderate anxiety, a strong gag reflex or difficulty sitting still for long procedures. It may be used for children who are nervous but able to cooperate with breathing through the nose. The dentist will consider your anxiety level, the procedure and your preferences when discussing it.
Certain conditions may make nitrous oxide unsuitable, including some respiratory problems, recent ear or eye surgery, early pregnancy and specific vitamin deficiencies. Nasal congestion can make it less effective. Share your full medical history, including medications, so the dentist can assess whether it is safe and appropriate for you.
During treatment
The mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally. The dentist gradually increases the nitrous oxide while monitoring your response. Once you feel relaxed, treatment begins. You can communicate throughout. Breathing through your nose, rather than your mouth, helps the gas work effectively.
When treatment is finished, the nitrous oxide is turned off and you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes. This helps clear the gas from your system. Most people feel back to normal shortly afterward. The dentist will check that you feel alert before you leave the chair.
Afterwards
Because effects wear off quickly, many adults can drive themselves home after nitrous oxide, though the dentist will advise based on how you feel. If you are unsure, arrange a driver. Eat a light meal beforehand, as a very full or empty stomach can sometimes cause nausea. Follow any specific instructions provided.
Nitrous oxide works best alongside communication and other comfort strategies, such as agreed signals, headphones and clear explanations. If it was helpful, mention it when booking future visits. If it did not provide enough relief, ask the dentist whether other approaches or sedation options might be considered for future treatment.
