Nitrous oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, is a mild sedative breathed through a small mask over the nose. It can help people feel more relaxed during dental treatment while remaining awake and able to respond. The effect begins within minutes and fades quickly once the gas is stopped, which makes it a flexible option for many patients.
If you or your child live in Normandale and feel nervous about dental treatment, our Port Dover team can discuss whether nitrous oxide is suitable. We review health history, explain what it feels like and outline how it fits with other comfort strategies.

How it works
Nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and breathed through a nasal mask. Many people describe feeling lighter, warm or tingly, with worries seeming less pressing. The dentist can adjust the level during treatment to keep you comfortable. It does not replace local anaesthetic, which is still used to numb the area.
You remain conscious and able to talk, follow instructions and signal if you need a pause. Because it is mild, nitrous oxide suits people with mild to moderate anxiety. Those with severe anxiety or complex needs might be better served by other approaches, which the dentist can discuss.
Is it suitable?
Tell the team about lung conditions, recent ear or sinus surgery, nasal congestion, vitamin B12 deficiency, pregnancy and any medications. These can affect whether nitrous oxide is appropriate. The dentist will review your health history and ask questions before recommending it.
If you cannot breathe comfortably through your nose, nitrous oxide may be less effective. Some people dislike the feeling of the mask or the sensations it produces. In those cases, other comfort strategies or forms of sedation might be considered. The dentist will explain the alternatives.
During treatment
The mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally. The dentist gradually introduces nitrous oxide and checks how you feel. Once you are relaxed, local anaesthetic is given if needed and treatment begins. You can let the team know if the effect feels too strong or not strong enough.
At the end of treatment, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear the gas. Most people feel back to normal quickly. The team will check you are ready before you leave. Ask whether you should arrange a ride, especially if other medications were used.
Children
For children who are anxious but able to cooperate, nitrous oxide may help them feel calmer during fillings or other procedures. The dentist will decide whether it is appropriate based on age, health and the treatment planned, and explain how it will be used.
Explain to your child that they will wear a special nose and breathe normally, and that it might feel a little funny. A light meal beforehand is often recommended. Follow any instructions the office provides about eating and drinking before the appointment.
