Nitrous oxide is a gas breathed through a small mask over the nose, mixed with oxygen. It can help many people feel calmer and more relaxed during dental treatment while staying awake and able to respond. Its effects begin fairly quickly and fade soon after the gas is stopped, which makes it a common choice for mild to moderate anxiety.
If you are coming from Nixon and dental visits make you nervous, ask about nitrous oxide at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health history, explain how it works and discuss whether it is a suitable option for your treatment and comfort needs.

How it works
Many people describe feeling relaxed, light or pleasantly warm, with tingling in the hands or feet. Worries may feel more distant, and time can seem to pass more quickly. You remain conscious, can breathe normally and can talk with the dental team. The level can be adjusted during the appointment to suit how you are feeling.
Nitrous oxide does not put you to sleep and does not replace local anaesthetic for numbing a tooth. You will still be aware of what is happening. It is generally used for mild to moderate anxiety; people with severe anxiety or complex needs may require other approaches, which the dentist can discuss if appropriate for your situation.
Is it suitable
Tell the dentist about all medical conditions and medications, including breathing problems, recent ear or sinus issues, pregnancy, vitamin B12 deficiency and any history of mental health conditions. Some situations make nitrous oxide unsuitable or require extra caution. Honest, complete information helps the dentist decide whether it is safe for you and how to use it.
Ask how nitrous oxide would be used for your specific procedure, how long the effects typically last and whether there are any restrictions afterward. If you have used it before, share how you felt. If you are unsure whether it will help, it is reasonable to ask about trying it during a shorter or simpler appointment first.
During treatment
A small mask is placed over your nose, and you are asked to breathe normally through it. The gas begins with oxygen, and nitrous oxide is gradually introduced. Within a few minutes, you may start to feel more relaxed. The team checks in with you regularly and adjusts the level according to your comfort and the stage of treatment.
When treatment is finished, the nitrous oxide is turned off and you breathe oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the gas from your system. Most people feel back to normal fairly quickly. The team will check that you feel alert and steady before you leave the chair and head out of the office.
Afterward
Many people are able to resume normal activities shortly after nitrous oxide wears off, but follow the dentist’s specific advice. If you feel lightheaded or unwell, tell the team before leaving. Some offices recommend having someone accompany you, especially for a first experience, so ask about this when booking your appointment from Nixon and plan the day with some flexibility.
Some people experience mild nausea, headache or tiredness after nitrous oxide. Eating a light meal beforehand, unless instructed otherwise, may help reduce nausea. Let the team know about any side effects you notice, so they can adjust the approach next time or consider other comfort options that may suit you better. Your experience helps shape future visits.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and let the team know you are interested in nitrous oxide. Share your health history and the treatment planned so the dentist can discuss suitability before your appointment.
Ask whether you should eat beforehand and whether a companion is recommended, so you can make arrangements in advance of the visit.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You stay awake and able to respond to the dental team. Nitrous oxide helps you feel more relaxed, but it is not general anaesthesia. Local anaesthetic is still used when a tooth needs to be numbed.
Nitrous oxide is sometimes used for children who are anxious, depending on their health and the treatment needed. The dentist will assess suitability and explain the process to both parent and child before using it.
Many people can, once the effects have worn off and they feel fully alert, but follow the dentist’s advice for your situation. If you feel at all unsteady or unwell, do not drive and arrange alternative transportation.
Certain conditions, such as some breathing problems, recent ear or sinus surgery, early pregnancy or specific vitamin deficiencies, may make it unsuitable. The dentist will review your health history before recommending it and suggest alternatives if needed.
Some people experience mild nausea, headache or lightheadedness. These usually pass quickly. Tell the team if you have had side effects before, so they can adjust the approach or suggest an alternative option for your next visit.
Sedation may help some patients cope with anxiety or longer procedures. Nixon patients can learn how options differ, who may qualify and how to prepare safely.
Is your child scared of the dentist? Nixon parents can learn practical ways to prepare, what to tell the team and how gentle pacing helps worried children cope.
