Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Lynedoch patientsMild, adjustable relaxation
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is breathed through a small mask over the nose, mixed with oxygen. It can produce a calm, light or tingly feeling within a few minutes while you remain awake and able to respond. The effect can be adjusted during treatment and usually fades quickly once the gas is stopped and oxygen is given.
Lynedoch patients who feel nervous about dental treatment, or parents of anxious children, can ask about nitrous oxide when booking at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health history to decide whether it is suitable and explain what you can expect during and after the visit.

Who it may suit
People with mild to moderate anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex or difficulty sitting through longer procedures may find nitrous oxide helpful. It is used for both adults and children in suitable situations. It does not replace local freezing, which is still used to keep the tooth comfortable during treatment.
Nitrous oxide may not be advised for people with certain lung conditions, some vitamin deficiencies, early pregnancy or a blocked nose that prevents breathing through the nose. Be thorough when sharing your medical history. The dentist will explain whether it is appropriate or whether another approach should be considered.
Before the visit
Follow any instructions about eating before the appointment. A light meal beforehand is often suggested to reduce nausea, but confirm with the office. Bring an updated medication list and mention recent illnesses, especially colds or congestion that may make nasal breathing difficult.
Because nitrous oxide wears off quickly, many adults can drive afterward once they feel fully normal, but confirm this with the dentist for your situation. Plan a little time after the appointment to recover before heading home. Parents should plan to accompany children throughout.
During treatment
A soft mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally. Within a few minutes, you may feel relaxed, warm, light or slightly tingly. You remain awake and can talk with the team. Breathing through your nose rather than your mouth helps the gas work as intended.
The level can be increased or decreased based on how you feel. Tell the team if you feel uncomfortable, too drowsy or nauseated. At the end of treatment, pure oxygen is given for a few minutes to help clear the gas before you sit up and get ready to leave.
After the appointment
The effects of nitrous oxide typically fade within minutes after oxygen is given. Some people feel slightly light-headed or have a mild headache. Take your time getting up. If you feel unwell or unusually tired later in the day, contact the office for advice.
Nitrous oxide is one of several options for managing anxiety. For some patients it is used along with other techniques such as breaks, music and clear communication. If it did not provide enough relief, discuss other comfort options with the dentist before your next appointment.
Planning your appointment
When booking at our Port Dover office, ask whether nitrous oxide may be suitable for your treatment. Share your medical history so the dentist can review it in advance.
Let the team know if you have a cold or blocked nose close to the appointment, as it may affect the plan.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You remain awake and able to respond. Nitrous oxide helps you feel more relaxed but does not cause unconsciousness. Local freezing is still used for comfort during treatment.
It is used for children in suitable situations under the dentist’s supervision. The dentist will review your child’s health and explain whether it is appropriate for the planned treatment.
Many adults can drive once the effects have fully worn off, but confirm with the dentist. If you feel any lingering drowsiness, arrange another way home.
Some people experience mild nausea, especially at higher levels. Eating a light meal beforehand and telling the team if you feel unwell can help. The level can be adjusted.
No. Nitrous oxide helps with relaxation, while local anaesthetic numbs the area being treated. Both are often used together to provide a more comfortable experience.
Sedation can help some patients get through dental treatment more comfortably. Lynedoch patients can learn about suitability, preparation and safety at our Port Dover office.
Does your child dread the dentist? Lynedoch parents can plan a calmer, step-by-step visit with our Port Dover team, with pacing and comfort options discussed first.
