Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is breathed through a small mask over the nose mixed with oxygen. Most people feel calmer, lighter or tingly within a few minutes, while remaining awake and able to respond. It is commonly used to ease mild to moderate anxiety or to help with longer appointments. Its effects fade quickly once the gas is stopped.
Long Point patients interested in nitrous oxide can discuss it with our Port Dover team. The dentist will review your health and the planned procedure to decide whether it is an appropriate option for you.

Who it helps
Nitrous oxide may help people with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, sensitivity to procedures or difficulty sitting through longer appointments. It is also used for some children who need a little extra help to relax. It does not replace freezing, which is still used to numb the area being treated.
Certain conditions can make nitrous oxide unsuitable, such as some respiratory problems, recent ear or eye surgery, early pregnancy, specific vitamin deficiencies or difficulty breathing through the nose. Share your full medical history and medication list so the dentist can decide whether it is safe and appropriate for you.
What it feels like
After the mask is placed, you breathe normally through your nose. Within minutes, you may feel warm, relaxed or tingly in your hands and feet. Some people feel a little giddy. Sounds may seem farther away. The level can be adjusted throughout the appointment so you feel comfortable without being overwhelmed.
You remain conscious and able to talk, follow instructions and signal if something bothers you. If you feel uncomfortable or nauseated, tell the clinician so the level can be adjusted. Nitrous oxide does not put you to sleep, and most people remember at least part of the appointment.
Preparation
Eat a light meal a couple of hours beforehand unless you have been given different instructions, since a full stomach may increase the chance of nausea. Continue regular medications unless advised otherwise. Tell the team about colds or congestion, because breathing through the nose is needed for nitrous oxide to work well.
Because effects wear off quickly, many adults can drive after a short recovery period, but follow the dentist’s advice for your situation. Children should always be accompanied. If nitrous oxide is combined with other sedation, different rules apply, and you may need someone to drive you home afterward.
After treatment
At the end of the appointment, pure oxygen is given for a few minutes to help clear the gas. The team will check that you feel alert before you leave. Some people feel briefly lightheaded or have a mild headache. Sit for a moment before standing, and let the clinician know how you feel.
Most people return to normal activities soon afterward, though following your specific post-treatment instructions for the dental procedure is still important. If you felt nauseated or uncomfortable with nitrous oxide, mention it at future visits so the level or approach can be adjusted next time.
Planning your appointment
When you call our Port Dover office, mention that you are interested in nitrous oxide and describe your concerns. The team can explain whether it might suit the planned procedure.
Bring an up-to-date medical history and medication list, and let the team know if you have nasal congestion on the day.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You remain awake and able to respond. Most people feel relaxed and calm. It is a mild form of sedation, different from deeper sedation or general anaesthesia used in other settings.
Many adults can drive after a short recovery period once the effects have cleared, but follow the dentist’s advice. If other sedatives are used, you will need someone to drive you home.
It is used for some children to help them relax during treatment. The dentist will review your child’s health and the procedure to decide whether it is appropriate in their case.
Usually, yes. Nitrous oxide helps you relax but does not numb the tooth. Local anaesthetic is still used for procedures that would otherwise be uncomfortable.
Tell the clinician right away. The level can be reduced or stopped and oxygen given. Eating a light meal beforehand may reduce the chance of nausea during the appointment.
Sedation can help some patients get through dental care with less worry. Long Point patients can learn about suitability, preparation and recovery in Port Dover.
Some children dread the dentist before they arrive. Long Point parents can share their child’s worries and plan a calmer, paced visit at our Port Dover office.
