Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative breathed through a small mask over the nose. It can help reduce anxiety and make dental treatment feel more manageable. You remain awake and able to respond, and the effects usually fade quickly once the gas is stopped and you breathe normal air.
For anxious adults and children coming from La Salette, our Port Dover dentist can discuss whether nitrous oxide is a suitable option. Your medical history, the planned treatment and your comfort needs all factor into the recommendation.

Who it may suit
People with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex or difficulty sitting through longer procedures may find nitrous oxide helpful. Some children benefit from it during treatment. It works alongside local anaesthetic, which is still needed to numb the tooth itself.
Certain conditions, such as some lung diseases, recent ear or eye surgery, early pregnancy and some vitamin deficiencies, may make nitrous oxide unsuitable. Blocked nasal passages can also make it less effective. Share your full medical history so the dentist can assess whether it is safe for you.
How it feels
As you breathe the gas, you may feel warm, light, tingly or pleasantly detached. Some people feel heavy in their arms and legs. Anxiety often eases. You can still hear the dentist, answer questions and follow instructions, which allows communication throughout treatment.
The level can be adjusted during the appointment. If you feel too lightheaded or uncomfortable, tell the team and they can reduce it. Breathing through your nose helps the gas work effectively, so let the dentist know if you have a cold or congestion before the visit.
The appointment
The dentist reviews your health history and explains what to expect. A light meal beforehand is often recommended rather than a heavy one. The mask is placed over your nose and the gas is gradually introduced. Once you feel relaxed, treatment can begin.
At the end of treatment, the dentist switches to pure oxygen for several minutes to help clear the gas. Most people feel back to normal quickly. The team will check that you feel alert before you leave and confirm when it is safe to drive.
Afterward
Many adults can resume normal activities shortly after the appointment, but follow the dentist’s specific guidance. Children should be supervised and may rest afterward. If other medicines or sedatives were also used, different instructions about driving and activities may apply.
Some people experience mild nausea or headache after nitrous oxide. These usually pass quickly. Let the office know if you feel unwell after leaving. Share how the sedation felt at your next visit so the dentist can adjust the approach if needed.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You remain awake and able to respond. Nitrous oxide helps you feel relaxed, but you can still communicate with the dentist throughout the procedure.
Many adults can drive after the effects wear off and oxygen is given, but always follow the dentist’s advice. If other sedatives are used, you will need someone to drive you home.
It is commonly used for children when appropriate. The dentist will consider your child’s health and needs before recommending it and will explain what to expect.
Usually yes, for procedures that require numbing. Nitrous oxide helps with anxiety and relaxation but does not replace local anaesthetic for blocking pain in the tooth.
Some people experience mild nausea, headache or dizziness. These usually pass quickly. Tell the team if you feel unwell during or after the visit.
Sedation can help with anxiety or longer procedures. La Salette patients can learn how suitability is assessed, how to prepare and why a ride matters.
