Seeing Jarvis patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Jarvis patientsMild, adjustable relaxation
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is breathed through a small mask over the nose. It produces a sense of relaxation and may reduce awareness of time and minor discomfort. You remain awake and able to respond. Its effects usually fade quickly once the gas is stopped and you breathe oxygen.
Suitability is decided case by case at our Port Dover office. Jarvis patients who are curious about laughing gas can ask about it before booking treatment, and the dentist will review health factors first.

Who it may help
It may be considered for mild to moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, longer appointments or children who struggle to settle. It is often used alongside local anaesthetic, which still numbs the tooth. Nitrous oxide is not a substitute for freezing, but it can make the overall experience feel more manageable.
It may not be suitable during pregnancy, with certain lung conditions, recent ear or eye surgery, some vitamin deficiencies, severe nasal congestion or for people who cannot breathe comfortably through the nose. The dentist will review your health history and explain whether nitrous oxide is a reasonable choice.
Preparing
Tell the team about all medical conditions, medications, recent illnesses and any history of reactions to sedation. Mention if you have a cold or blocked nose, since breathing through the mask is important. For children, share any developmental or medical information that might affect how they respond.
Follow any instructions you are given about eating beforehand; a light meal is often recommended rather than a heavy one. Many people can drive after the effects wear off, but ask the office for guidance and consider arranging a ride if you are unsure how you will feel.
During treatment
A small mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally. The dentist gradually adjusts the mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Many people feel light, warm, tingly or relaxed within a few minutes. Breathe through your nose and let the team know how you feel.
You remain conscious and can talk and respond throughout. If you feel too light-headed, nauseous or uncomfortable, say so and the level can be reduced. Local anaesthetic is usually still given to numb the tooth. A stop signal can still be agreed upon for any time you need a break.
Afterward
At the end of treatment, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to help clear the gas. Most people feel back to normal shortly afterward. The team will check that you feel alert before you leave. Take your time getting up from the chair to avoid feeling dizzy.
Some people experience mild headache or nausea afterward, which usually passes. Follow aftercare instructions for the dental treatment itself. If you have unusual symptoms or feel unwell later, contact the office. Let the team know how it went so future visits can be planned.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and ask whether nitrous oxide is an option for your planned treatment. Mention your anxiety level and any health conditions.
Bring a list of medications and let the team know if you have a cold or nasal congestion on the day of your appointment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You remain awake and able to respond. Nitrous oxide helps you feel relaxed but does not put you to sleep. You can talk with the dentist throughout.
Many people can once the effects wear off, but follow the office’s guidance. If you feel unsure, arrange for someone to drive you home.
It is commonly used for children when appropriate. The dentist will review your child’s health and explain whether it is suitable for their treatment.
No. Nitrous oxide helps with relaxation but local anaesthetic is usually still needed to numb the tooth for procedures.
Let the team know right away. The level can be adjusted or the gas stopped. Avoiding a heavy meal beforehand can reduce the chance of nausea.
Sedation may help with anxiety or longer procedures for some patients. Learn how suitability is assessed, how to prepare and why a Jarvis patient may need a ride home.
