Nitrous oxide is a gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small nose mask. It produces a calm, relaxed feeling within a few minutes and wears off quickly once the mask is removed. You stay awake and able to respond throughout. It does not replace local anaesthetic for numbing a tooth, but it can make the experience of treatment feel more manageable.
Hagersville patients interested in nitrous oxide can discuss it at our Port Dover office. Because it typically clears quickly, it can suit people who want help relaxing but need to get on with their day and the trip home afterwards.

Who it may help
Nitrous oxide may help people with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex or difficulty staying still for longer appointments. It is sometimes used for children who are anxious but cooperative. It works best when you are willing to breathe through your nose, since the gas is delivered by a mask that rests over it.
It may not be appropriate during early pregnancy, with certain lung conditions, a blocked nose, some vitamin deficiencies or specific medical histories. Tell the dentist about all health conditions and medications. For severe anxiety or extensive treatment, other forms of sedation or a referral may be discussed instead, depending on your needs.
Before the appointment
Your medical history is reviewed to make sure nitrous oxide is safe for you. Mention respiratory conditions, recent ear or sinus surgery, pregnancy and any medications. If you have a cold or congestion on the day, call the office, because breathing through the nose may be difficult and the plan might need to change.
A light meal a couple of hours before is usually recommended rather than an empty stomach or a heavy meal. Wear comfortable clothing. Ask the team whether you can drive afterwards; recovery is usually quick, but the dentist will advise based on your response. Allow a little extra time before setting off back to Hagersville.
During treatment
The mask is placed over your nose, and you breathe normally. The dentist gradually adjusts the mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Many people describe feeling warm, light, tingly or pleasantly detached. Local anaesthetic is still used to numb the tooth. If you feel uncomfortable or too drowsy, tell the team so the level can be adjusted.
You can talk, respond to questions and signal for a break at any time. Some people find the sensation odd at first and need a moment to settle into it. The team monitors you throughout. If you prefer to stop using the gas, it can be turned off and its effects begin to fade within minutes.
Afterwards
At the end of treatment, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear the nitrous oxide. Most people feel back to normal shortly afterwards. Occasionally, mild nausea, headache or lightheadedness occurs, usually brief. Let the team know how you feel before you stand up or leave the treatment room.
Many adults can resume normal activities soon after, but the dentist will confirm whether it is safe for you to drive. For children, a parent will need to be present and take them home. If you have any lingering effects, rest before making the trip back to Hagersville rather than rushing out of the office.

Bring a full medication list and let the team know about pregnancy, respiratory conditions or recent surgery before your appointment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You stay awake and able to talk and respond. Nitrous oxide creates a sense of relaxation and calm rather than sleep. You may feel less aware of time passing, but you remain in control throughout.
Effects usually wear off within minutes of breathing oxygen. Many adults can drive afterwards, but the dentist will assess how you feel first. If you have any lingering effects, wait or arrange for someone else to drive.
It is commonly used for anxious but cooperative children. The dentist reviews your child’s health first and monitors them throughout. A parent or guardian needs to be present and take the child home afterwards.
No. It helps you relax but does not provide numbing. Local anaesthetic is still used to keep the tooth comfortable during treatment. The two work together to make the appointment more manageable.
Some people feel less effect than others. The dentist can adjust the level or discuss other comfort strategies. For severe anxiety or complex care, alternative sedation or referral may be considered.
Sedation can help some patients get through dental care more comfortably. Hagersville patients can learn about options, safety checks and the ride home.
Some children dread the dentist. Hagersville parents can learn ways to prepare, what the team can adjust and how visits are paced at our Port Dover office.
