Nitrous oxide is a gas mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small mask over the nose. It produces a light, relaxed feeling for many people and is often used to ease anxiety during dental treatment. You remain awake and able to respond, and the effects usually fade quickly once the gas is turned off and you breathe oxygen.
If nerves have made dental visits hard, Glen Meyer patients can ask whether nitrous oxide may be suitable at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health and the planned treatment, and explain what it would involve before any decision is made about using it.

Who it may suit
Nitrous oxide may help adults and some children who feel anxious, have a strong gag reflex or find it difficult to sit through treatment comfortably. It can be useful for shorter procedures or for people who want a light level of relaxation without being fully sedated. The dentist will discuss whether it fits your needs and the treatment planned.
Certain conditions, such as some breathing problems, recent ear or sinus surgery, early pregnancy, some vitamin deficiencies and particular medications, may make nitrous oxide unsuitable. A blocked nose can also make it hard to breathe through the mask. Share your full medical history so the dentist can decide whether it is a safe and appropriate choice.
Before your visit
Follow any instructions about eating before your appointment. A light meal beforehand is often recommended rather than a heavy one, but the dentist will advise based on your situation. Continue prescribed medications unless your physician or dentist tells you otherwise, and let the team know about any changes to your health since you booked, including a recent cold.
Many adults are able to drive after nitrous oxide once the effects have fully worn off, but this is not the case for every person or every type of sedation. Ask the team whether you should arrange a ride home. For children, a parent or guardian should accompany them and stay nearby during the visit.
During treatment
A small mask is placed over your nose, and you breathe normally through it. The dentist gradually adjusts the mixture until you feel relaxed. People describe sensations such as warmth, tingling or heaviness in the arms and legs. Local anaesthetic is still used for treatment that would otherwise be uncomfortable, because nitrous oxide does not numb the teeth.
You will be able to hear and respond to the dentist throughout. If you feel too light-headed, nauseated or uncomfortable, let the team know so the level can be reduced. Breathing through your nose rather than your mouth helps the gas work properly. The team monitors you during the procedure and keeps checking in on how you feel.
After the appointment
At the end of treatment, oxygen is given for a few minutes to help clear the gas from your system. Most people feel back to normal shortly afterward, though some may feel tired or slightly light-headed for a short time. The dentist will check that you are ready to leave and give you any specific instructions.
Contact the office if you experience ongoing nausea, headache or unusual symptoms after your visit. Mention these effects at your next appointment, so the approach can be adjusted if needed. If nitrous oxide did not provide enough relief, ask whether other comfort options might be more suitable in the future. Your feedback helps shape the plan for the next visit.

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Nitrous oxide provides light relaxation, and you remain awake and able to respond. Some people feel less aware of time passing. If you need deeper sedation, the dentist can explain whether other options might be appropriate for you.
When used appropriately and monitored by trained staff, nitrous oxide is commonly used in dentistry. It is not suitable for everyone, so the dentist will review your health history before recommending it. Ask any questions you have about safety.
Some children may benefit from nitrous oxide to help them relax during treatment. Suitability depends on the child’s age, health and ability to breathe through the nose mask. The dentist will discuss this with parents before any decision is made.
No. Nitrous oxide helps with relaxation, but local anaesthetic is still used to numb the area for procedures that would otherwise be painful. The two work together to help you stay calm and comfortable throughout.
Many adults can drive once the effects have fully worn off, but this depends on how you feel and the dentist’s assessment. Ask the team before your appointment whether you should arrange transportation home to Glen Meyer.
Sedation can help some patients through anxiety or longer procedures. Glen Meyer patients can learn how suitability is assessed and what preparation involves.
Some children dread the dentist. Glen Meyer parents can learn how to prepare a worried child, what to tell the team and how visits can be paced to build trust.
