Nitrous oxide, sometimes called laughing gas, is a mild sedative breathed through a small mask over the nose. It can help people feel calmer and more relaxed during treatment while staying awake and able to respond. Its effects usually wear off quickly once the gas is stopped.
Cultus patients who feel anxious about dental visits can ask about nitrous oxide at our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health history, explain how it works and help you decide whether it suits you and the treatment planned. You can also ask simply to learn more.

Is it suitable?
People with mild to moderate anxiety, a strong gag reflex or difficulty sitting still for longer procedures may benefit. Some children are also offered nitrous oxide. It works best for people who are comfortable breathing through the nose and want to stay aware while feeling more at ease. It is often used for fillings, cleanings and other routine work.
Certain conditions, such as some lung problems, recent ear or sinus surgery, early pregnancy and particular vitamin deficiencies, may make nitrous oxide unsuitable. Blocked nasal passages can make it less effective. Share your full medical history so the dentist can determine whether it is a safe option for you. A cold on the day may mean rescheduling.
What it feels like
As you breathe the mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, you may feel warm, relaxed, tingly or lightheaded. Time may seem to pass more quickly. Some people feel a little giggly. The dentist adjusts the level so you feel comfortable but remain responsive throughout the appointment. Some people barely notice the effect; others feel it strongly.
You stay awake and can talk, follow instructions and signal if you need a break. If you feel uncomfortable or nauseous, let the dentist know and the level can be adjusted. Nitrous oxide does not replace local anaesthetic, which is still used to numb the area being treated. Many people find the injection easier once relaxed.
The appointment
Eat a light meal a couple of hours before, unless advised otherwise, since a full stomach may increase the chance of nausea. A small mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally. The dentist gradually increases the nitrous oxide until you feel relaxed, then carries out treatment. Breathing through the nose keeps the effect steady.
At the end, you breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes to clear the gas from your system. Most people feel back to normal shortly afterward. The dentist will check how you feel before you leave. Ask whether you can drive yourself home, since advice may vary with individual circumstances. Having a ride available is a sensible backup.
Making a choice
Nitrous oxide is a lighter form of sedation than oral or intravenous options. For people with severe anxiety or complex procedures, other forms of sedation may be discussed, possibly in a different setting. The dentist will explain the differences, including preparation and recovery requirements. Deeper options usually require fasting and someone to take you home, which is worth knowing before you choose.
Nitrous oxide works well alongside other strategies such as stop signals, breaks, headphones and clear explanations. Some people find that after a few positive experiences with sedation, they feel comfortable having routine care without it. Discuss your long-term goals with the dentist. Whether you use nitrous for every visit or only for certain procedures, the plan can change as your confidence grows.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and mention you are interested in nitrous oxide. The team can explain whether it is available for your treatment and what preparation is needed beforehand.
Bring a full medication list and mention any breathing, sinus or ear problems. Let the team know if you are or might be pregnant.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You remain awake and able to respond. Nitrous oxide helps you feel relaxed, but you can still talk and follow instructions during treatment. Many people describe feeling calm and a little detached from what is happening.
No. It helps you relax but does not numb the area. Local anaesthetic is still used for procedures that require numbing. The two work well together: one eases the worry, the other blocks the sensation in the treatment area.
Effects usually wear off quickly after breathing oxygen. The dentist will assess how you feel and advise whether it is safe for you to drive. If in doubt, wait a little longer before leaving the office.
It is commonly used for children when appropriate. The dentist will consider your child’s age, health and needs and explain whether it is suitable. Children need to be able to breathe through the nose comfortably.
Tell the dentist. They can reduce the level or stop the gas and give you oxygen. Eating lightly beforehand can help reduce the chance of nausea. Mention any past nausea with sedation or anaesthesia when booking.
Sedation can help some patients through dental treatment more comfortably. Cultus patients can learn about types of sedation, safety checks and preparation.
When a child is scared of the dentist, preparation and patience help. Cultus parents can learn how our Port Dover team adapts visits for nervous kids.
