Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative breathed through a small mask over the nose. It can reduce anxiety and make dental treatment feel more manageable. You remain awake and able to respond throughout, and the effects typically fade within minutes once the gas is switched off and pure oxygen is given.
Brantford patients interested in nitrous oxide can ask about it when booking with our Port Dover office. The dentist will review your health history, explain whether it suits your procedure and discuss what to expect afterward, including whether you are likely to be comfortable driving home or should bring someone with you.

How it works
Many people describe feeling relaxed, light or tingly in the arms and legs. Some feel warm or slightly giddy, and time can seem to pass more quickly. Anxiety often eases noticeably. You remain conscious and can talk with the dentist throughout. Nitrous oxide does not numb the tooth, so local anaesthetic is still used for procedures that need it.
The dentist adjusts the level of nitrous oxide during treatment according to how you feel. If you become too lightheaded, nauseated or uncomfortable, the level can be lowered immediately. At the end, pure oxygen is given for several minutes to clear the gas from your system, and the dentist checks that you feel normal before you get up.
Is it suitable?
Nitrous oxide may help people with mild to moderate dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex or difficulty sitting through longer appointments. It is also used for some children who need help relaxing. The dentist will discuss whether it is a reasonable option for your particular procedure and comfort needs, and whether other strategies might work as well.
Some situations, such as certain lung conditions, a blocked nose, recent ear or eye surgery, early pregnancy and some vitamin deficiencies, may make nitrous oxide unsuitable. Tell the dentist about all medical conditions and medications before the appointment. If it is not appropriate, other comfort approaches can be discussed so you still have support.
On the day
Eat a light meal a couple of hours beforehand unless you are told otherwise, since an empty stomach or a heavy meal can make nausea more likely. Wear comfortable clothing. Let the dentist know if you have a cold or congestion, because you need to breathe through your nose for the gas to work, and the appointment may need rescheduling.
The mask is placed over your nose and the gas is introduced gradually. Treatment begins once you feel relaxed. Afterward, oxygen is given and the dentist confirms you feel normal. Many adults can drive once the effects have cleared, but ask beforehand and bring a companion if you are unsure, particularly given the longer trip back to Brantford.
Other options
Clear explanations, an agreed stop signal, short breaks, headphones and breathing techniques help many anxious patients. These can be combined with nitrous oxide or used on their own. Discuss which approaches appeal to you, so the dental team can plan an appointment that feels manageable and gives you a sense of control from start to finish.
For severe anxiety or more complex procedures, deeper sedation may be discussed. These options usually involve more preparation, closer monitoring and a responsible adult to drive you home. The dentist will explain the differences, benefits and risks, and whether a referral to a provider offering deeper sedation would be more appropriate for your situation.
Planning your appointment
When booking with our Port Dover office, mention you are interested in nitrous oxide. The team will review your health history and explain whether it can be used for your appointment.
Ask whether you will be able to drive afterward, so you can arrange transportation back to Brantford if needed.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. You remain awake and able to respond. Nitrous oxide helps you feel relaxed and less anxious, but you can communicate with the dentist throughout the procedure, answer questions and signal if you need a break.
Many adults can drive once the effects have worn off and oxygen has been given. The dentist will check how you feel before you leave. If you feel unwell or unsure, arrange for someone else to drive you home.
It has a long history of use in dentistry and is generally considered safe for many people when properly administered and monitored. The dentist will review your health history first to make sure it is suitable for you.
Nitrous oxide is often used for children who need help relaxing during treatment. Suitability depends on age, health and willingness to wear the nose mask. The dentist will discuss whether it is appropriate for your child.
No. It reduces anxiety but does not numb the area being treated. Local anaesthetic is usually still needed for procedures that might cause discomfort, and the dentist will explain how the two work together.
